I am a gardener and pay my member of staff (landscape maintenance assistant) £19k pro rata. Self-employed is the only way for me.

36, and work as a Support Manager for a multinational IT Company.

50K plus paid private Health Insurance for whole famile, Dental insurance for whole family, paid Gym, Private Pension, Death in Service Benefit of 4x Salary, and Critical Illness Cover.

But biggest perk is probably the fact that I am working from home full time.

Hi all! I'm 26 y/o, working as an Office Manager for a small tech firm in central London on £25K plus benefits. I am relatively inexperienced at the role and hoping command a much higher salary after sticking at it for a couple of years.

My employer pays into my pension (I don't contribute) I also get private healthcare, C.I & shares. I am grateful for my wage but it doesn't stop me wanting more £. My ultimate goal is to become a corporate lawyer. I have completed the first stage of training but need sponsorship to complete the next and final stage. Even if I get sponsorship I will be at least 29 before I start a job in law. Call me ridiculous but I do worry this is a little late to be starting a career (for a female anyway)

Maybe I should forget about earning more and just be happy that I have a job I actually enjoy??

    FANTASTIC thread!

I wouldn't say so. When my wife joined a magic circle firm she was in the minority in going straight there from uni and law school. Lots of people had had jobs before, been abroad, studied for masters. 29 is not particularly old and whilst you may find it difficult to become a partner in some of the more traditional firms in the city it would not stop you building a career and being successful in it.

It's not an easy ride but if you are interested in it I would say GO FOR IT!

Thank you Somethingcorporate! My gut instinct is certainly to go for it despite my doubts, I am so very ready for a challenge and I loved the Graduate Diploma in Law course so I know where my interest lies. Thinking about it, my worries are probably a projection of insecurity about my ability rather than the age I'll be at the time. So time to refresh myself on my legal study topics and do all I can to attempt to get one of those training contracts! :)

If you don't mind me asking, Somethingcorporate: what does your wife feel was the skill/experience she had which was valued most by the magic circle firm?

My wife was academically amazing - first class law degree from Oxford so this was probably the thing that got her into this particularly "traditional" (very stuffy, old boys network etc) law firm.

However, she was actually in the minority - in her intake there were lots of people with a huge range of backgrounds (music, geography, history, languages - very few academic lawyers) and it was generally breadth of background and experience that stands people with the best chance of getting into these law firms. Having a passion for law would also be excellent and give you something to talk about in an interview. My wife had done a work experience at the local courts when she was 14 so had something related to talk about!

If you are interested in learning more about the community of (typically) london lawyers and that network keep your eye on www.rollonfriday.com. Whilst the community does seem enigmatic to those on the outside they are often very nice, down-to-earth and hardworking people.

Good luck, if you genuinely are interested then I would suggest it is worth going for. Better a more "mature" person with an interest in the job than a 21 year old with a great degree but no real passion for the subject.
