somethingcorporate wrote: »My wife was academically amazing - first class law degree from Oxford so this was probably the thing that got her into this particularly "traditional" (very stuffy, old boys network etc) law firm.
However, she was actually in the minority - in her intake there were lots of people with a huge range of backgrounds (music, geography, history, languages - very few academic lawyers) and it was generally breadth of background and experience that stands people with the best chance of getting into these law firms. Having a passion for law would also be excellent and give you something to talk about in an interview. My wife had done a work experience at the local courts when she was 14 so had something related to talk about!
If you are interested in learning more about the community of (typically) london lawyers and that network keep your eye on www.rollonfriday.com. Whilst the community does seem enigmatic to those on the outside they are often very nice, down-to-earth and hardworking people.
Good luck, if you genuinely are interested then I would suggest it is worth going for. Better a more "mature" person with an interest in the job than a 21 year old with a great degree but no real passion for the subject.
Thanks for the advice, somethingcorporate, much appreciated. I have done a bit of lurking on roll on friday before but will start following it more closely...Student loan £5655

I am 25 years old and earn £16.5k per year working in group sales for a coach travel company (Luxury travel for the retired). There is potential to earn bonus payments and hight street vouchers sent as an incentive from suppliers. I do not have A Levels or a Degree just grade B & C GCSE'S. I get free holidays staying in top class UK hotels with my fiance and get to attend lots of hotel functions with free champagne and 3 course meals
hehe
It is not the best salary in the world but it's only 35 hours a week with weekends off and when I do have to visit hotels etc it feels more like a treat than work
My Fiance is the high earner working in I.T. and we are both debt free. He has a pension but I do not, instead I have a savings account. We have no debt just a mobile phone contract each and are applying for a mortgage this year0 -

I am 41, research scientist working for a research council. Salary is £32K which is low but I am happy as I get a generous pension and flexible hours.
The only reason I would leave my job is if I had an idea of my own which I could develop and make lots of money. Sounds shallow but hey ho.0 -
