Sorry to hear that marshall. Ive just been reading up on the collodial silver and it does seem to be very useful anti bacterial stuff. Im thinking of getting some or even getting the little machine to make your own. A lot of websites suggest using it to just wipe the eyes.
  • sorry, this is slightly off topic, but did you see that fella who turned blue after using colloidal slver - he now looks like papa smurf but says he feels fine!?

marshallka, good luck for your dog tomorrow! Let us know how he does.

    simple corneal ulcer.

Hmmm. Not so simple methinks. Breed? Could I hazard a guess at Boxer? If not then my Derren Brown tactics dont work.

Corneal ulcers can be VERY hard and FAR from simple. Gold standard is a limbal based split thickness conjunctival flap but this will probably require you to visit a specialist. I do them but that is because I am a soft tissue surgeon with some eye experience. They require 2 ops - one to create the flap and one in a few weeks to sever the attachment and allow it to heal into the cornea. The whole healing process takes a few months but I rarely have any failures.

DO NOT under any circumstances put any rubbish into the eye which is not specifically licensed for ocular use. I have seen 2 very serious eye problems due to "self medication" this year - one dog will almost certainly lose its eye as a result.

Note to readers... Featured in the above: 400 reasons not to cancel insurance as an "economy measure". Just had to euthanase a dog yesterday as owners could not afford a referral for a straightforward problem - cancelled insurance in a similar way- not funny, not economic and not good for anyone.

    .

LOL yes I saw that when I was researching - but I also read lots of other sites which referred to him as being slightly unstable and using way too much concentrate for many many years. The fact that he is still using that much every day makes you realise he does have some sort of mental problems anyway.

Apart from him, every site seems to give very good reports on it.

Simon, sorry to hear about that dog - was there no local charity who could have helped them?

Can you tell us what medication was given to the other dogs which proved disastrous?

This is where it gets a bit shocking: one was treating his dog with a diluted bleach solution - the resultant corneal damage has taken some months to improve. The other was a popular eye ointment for human use available over the counter and I shan't name it. This was less severe but it certainly made a slight conjunctivitis a whole lot worse.

Oh my gawd, bleach? was he a mad man or what.

My dog has dry eye which comes and goes with no pattern whatsoever. I get the Maxitrol drops from the vet and tears naturale. Some days he can hardly open his eyes. Ill make an appointment for him say in the afternoon and by the time I go the eyes are wide open and shining. No pattern at all to it. Other times the gunk will be right over his eye or eyes and it will take a week or more to sort. Then we will have literally months with no problem at all. We have bought an air purfier which we keep on in the main room as we wondered if it were pollen or dust.
  • hethmar, papa smurf is not the only person to turn blue from colloidal silver - I spent quite a lot of time reseaching this last night as I became fascinated...type argyria into google image search!

Having said that it does not appear to cause many problems other than cosmetic and a blue dog may be sort of cool.. hmmm...

Marshallka, any news on the dog yet?
  • Arghhhh....i just realised you cancelled your insurance. I know its too late to make comment as what is done is done but i hope others read this and reinstate any pet insurances they have cancelled - if you feel it is too expensive then shop around, or at the bare minimum go for a very basic insurance or a high excess to keep the premiums down. Overall i pay £26 a month (and thats not basic level) for my two dogs but if ever one had to be treated at least i know they will be covered as without the insurance there is no way i'd be able to cover the costs of treatment and wouldn't even like to think of the consequences.

I hope and pray these meds work for you! Good luck! Please keep us informed! x

Right he was operated on again on Wednesday and they have done the same op again. They really cannot offer an explanation why this ulcer will not heal but have also done a blood culture (which is being sent off next week if the ulcer is not improving) and also they have checked him out for glaucoma, diabetes, and something else and he is clear for those which is a relief to some extent.

They told us the the next thing is an eye specialist which will be in the thousands she told my hubby. We have paid now £575 and then have to go again next week which will include the culture and be about another £100 and then pills as well. SHe also said that our insurance that we had got and cancelled would have only covered us for so much anyway (£2500 and would only cover 12 months of treatment). We will find what we can for him and have done so far. We just have to hope and pray this works this time. We have redone the insurance now but too late for this one. He is 9 this year and we had never ran into any probs and we really did have to cancel it when it was a case of the roof over our heads. We have not let him suffer and will not let him suffer and will do all we can.

Thanks for asking and all your help on here.:A
