My dogs 8th vet visit tonight - wish him luck

Its my dogs 8th visit to the vets tonight for a corneal ulcer which we were told weeks ago would most likely clear within the week.
We have been backwards and forwards now and he has endured two operations and still its persistent and very sore and very large but they did say "superficial" which I find hard to believe.
If they suggest another op tonight the same as the ones before I will hit the roof. It looks so bad now and we are doing everything they tell us (which is only really "come back next week"). Our problem is he is very aggressive at the vets and also very hyper and him having to have extreme eye surgery would be torture. His eye actually looks a different colour to his other one that has cleared up now. Every time they do the dye in it its full completely and much bigger (to me) than last time. Surely they should try antibiotics as well after having surgery. All he has is rymadyl tabs which are anti imflammatory which do help but do nothing for the actual eye really. I am dreading them saying that if they operate with a bigger operation our dog, being as he is would not stand it. I KNOW they have to do something quick as this is not getting better at all but the thought is killing me of how he will cope. He has to be muzzled now at the vets and he growls really bad at them. I understand he must be in some pain to do this but how do they deal with dogs like this that need constant treatment and could need an op that requires a general rather than sedation. He is near on 9 years old so not a young dog but also very hyper too. He is still playing now even with his eye closed. He goes at 6.10 but I am not going with him, I make him worse panicky so my hubby and son are taking him. Please wish him luck. I just hope they are going to say that its an infection got in although I sort of know otherwise...

Its not the back and forth that bothers me, its the fact that they just keep saying the same thing for something that should be healed about 6 weeks ago:confused:. Thanks for that Bunny.;)

Have you thought about asking for a second opinion or referral to a specialist (insurance permitting.)
Sounds like you're starting to lose faith in your vet, so another opinion might at best put your mind at rest, or give you some other options to look at. Have you expressed your concerns to the vet, and asked why they haven't prescribed antibiotics? They may have a valid reason, but you're the paying customer so you deserve a full explanation of what they are doing (or not) and why.
    Good luck, either way.

We are not insured actually for this as we cancelled the insurance during the credit crunch and re insured after this incidence. We have two dogs. We have paid out £350 so far.

They wanted to operate again tomorrow morning but we have asked if we can try antibiotics as the previous two ops have not worked and his eye is infected now. They have allowed us this for one week and then we go again next week for another consultation. Again they say that its not healed at all. His whole cornea is stained now. We just have to hope and pray these 3 meds work and then go back. If they don't then I don't mind them operating again but its so sore for him at the moment. I just want the infection clearing a bit first. Thanks for listening again. ;)

Whereabouts do you live? There is an animal eye hospital not far from me near Leominster. It sounds like you need to be referred to a specialist!

We live in stoke but thanks for that. If they do not make his eye better after next week and maybe the other op again then I shall be contacting some specialists myself. He should not still be suffering for something that we were told would be cleared in one week to 10 days. Its now been since 13th April, which was the bank holiday. I know they are doing their best perhaps but I just hate to see him like this. Its just so frustrating.

Oh and £400 total now for something that is still not cleared up and a simple corneal ulcer.

So sorry to hear this marshall, not least for the poor boy suffering.

I know its probably not something you could do now, but one of mine suffers from dry eye and Im currently thinking of trying collodial silver to help him - see Pet Nat site. I got some creme and shampoo off them for my other boy who has bad seasonal skin allergies and blow me, its been a god send after all the stuff the vet doles out which works for a short time. I am very impressed by it and Im not easily impressed I can tell you. I mentioned about the other boys eyes to the people who sell the skin stuff and they suggested the silver which they sell.

Update. We have tried for one week with antibiotics, both eye drops and tablets and its not worked so he is being operated on again tomorrow morning. If this does not work this time then i assume they will get us to see an eye specialist.

Thanks hethmar for the post about the collodial silver. I had never heard of it but dare not do anything yet. I thought the anti biotics were working at first but then he was stratching again and holding it shut. I just hate the vets visits and putting him under.
