My dogs 8th vet visit tonight - wish him luck

Yeah, I will get one. I can't see why they did not want me to get one TBH. They just said it would not be something we would need right now. I know what you mean though. I would be worried if he was wobbly. He is better today than yesterday with his legs though but panting a lot as usual with the sun shining. Do you do your blood tests from the ear?buddys_mum wrote: »I really would get that glucose monitor, The monitor it self cost me £11.72 and 50 strips for testing was £25.96. Right then......
A glucose accutrend/Glucometer periodic check = £19.26
Urine analisys dipstick =£3.87
Glucose accutrend/glucometer multiples =£10.47
You wont be charged this every time you go to the vet, but just to give you an idea of charges that i have. You might find that you are going nearly every 7 days to start with just to get the levels right and then progressing upto 10 day visits. The monitor will be handy in case you are worried at all in the middle of the night if he becomes wobbly - is it arthritis or a hypo? Do your own test and ease your mind, saves having to call out the vet for emergancy. This has saved alot of worry for me several times at weekends.
Once he is settled just do your own tests, its been 6 weeks since we seen the vet, although we do goto be weighed every fortnight.
Last year after an evening walk he collapsed in the sun. We got back (this was just after his eyes episodes too) and he fell against the gates and then circled and circled and went over. I got water to him and wet under his arms and got a damp towel to him but knew not to cover him with it. He was OK but with being very stressed we left it until morning to take him the vets in case he had a heart attack. I sat with him all night and he seemed to get over it and the next day the vets checked his heart and said he was fine but with being hyper and pulling so much on the lead and it had led to heatstroke. She told us to get a different collar (which we tried and harness's etc) and nothing is any different. I just walk with him pulling me and I do not give a damn what anyone says. He is OK after a while and will settle but he gets so excited when he is out that he does not know when to stop. We try and limit his walks in hot weather though and I actually prefer to take him when its raining lol. At least he is cooled down.0 -
Is the Liver Damage irreversible Marshallka?:mad:0

I don't know maxdp. He just said that his liver was showing as up and that he would expect it with what he had. I have googled (as you do) and cannot tell if every diabetic dog has it. Once started on the insulin though that should stop it maybe. His poops are a normal colour and consistency though so thats a plus. Just have to wait and see with that one. I know the liver can repair itself can't it.Is the Liver Damage irreversible Marshallka?0 -
I take blood from Buddys ear. Maybe the vets dont want you doing your own tests, because at the end of the day they are going to lose money.
Is your vet independant or part of a chain?0 -
They have a couple of surgeries aound our area as far as I know. Last year it took them 3 operations on his eye just for a corneal ulcer and cost us £800 in the end.buddys_mum wrote: »I take blood from Buddys ear. So I understand Marshallka. Do you think you would be able to "treat" him yourself, taking blood tests etc. Would he let you do that (if he keeps still long enough):mad:0 -

Not knowing what s really involved i cant say whether thats a long time or nor, maybe simontheiceman could comment?
Are you happy there, maybe change to a different one, i did with Buddy and it was a brilliant move. He never liked the vets before, i didnt have to muzzel him and he never growled but i had to pull him into the consulting room and when he spoke it didnt seem as tough he was passionate about his work. Where as with ny current vet, he has a bubbly personality, very cheery chap and Buddy loves him and the lady vet. They open the door and call him in with a ' come on Buddy boy' and in he trots wagging his tail!0 -
If its weekly then I would rather do it myself although don't know if I could manage it TBH cause he would need wrestling lol. They will obviously want us to use them as its "money". They knew we would have paid whatever last year over his eyes and we did.So I understand Marshallka. I know they did the Fluctosamine test to see how he was over the weeks prior to going the vets and it came back 530 which looking at the net is high. I cannot understand though how he is so well other than the weeing and water and also the legs when he rises. He is still as lively as ever and darting about and he is not a spring chicken anyway.
We had two accidents at Christmas from him. He wee'd in the house but we just assumed him being excited cause people were backwards and forwards. He also, during the hot weather, lay under the patio table after we were playing ball with him and wet whilst lying down and it was like a river. We put that down to the fact that he cannot stand the heat since the heat exhaustion episode and he was not "ill" as in lethargic. Then about two weeks before we went away he had wee'd in the house after my son came home late and again we just thought "his age type of thing". He then peed a few more times and I thought he was then remarking his old wee as it was the same place. Then whilst on holiday my son was vaxing everyday and we were only gone less than a week and on returning home we took him straight to the vets.0 -
I think maybe you are right. They actually make me feel uneasy as if he is the worst dog they have ever treated. He is not I would not think. They got their dog psychologist to talk to us and said we should put him down as he is aggressive which he is at the vets. He is so playful here but very bostrious. I have asked for pills to calm him down so many times. They will not prescribe and he has been in "therapy" also which cost us a lot. He has never bitten anyone and did not used to be growly at all. He only started since his eyes.buddys_mum wrote: »Not knowing what s really involved i cant say whether thats a long time or nor, maybe simontheiceman could comment?
