I take it you mean Rimadyl????? Yes, I had a "discussion" last year about them putting him on this for his eyes and I was worried about his liver over it. They told me I was being silly for what I was reading on the internet and they kept prescribing and saying he would be in terrible pain without it. Yes I did reluctantly continue it. They did a blood culture on him at that time also which showed "Normal" results as they told me. I want to see them on computer cause when I rang this morning and spoke to the nurse she said he did have it for "some time" and then yesterday the vet said he had not had it long. I was told that he was certainly not a good candidate for diabetes and TBH with him being tested and them saying how his results were completely normal last year I had not thought it was this that he had now. I honestly thought a kidney infection or kidney problems. I know rimidyl can cause all sorts of organ damage and I do believe it. My sisters vets receptionist actually told me to give our dogs Greeen Lipped Muscle extract for there joints and NEVER to give rimidyl. Our vets have also said that I should not believe what I read on the internet. How do you learn otherwise though????Marshallka is your dog on Metacam?0 -
Hiya Buddys mum. I did not get an appointment today but had a ring back over his diet which they say they will sort next week. I wanted to get him on something that was better. We changed to a really good hyperallegenic food last year (dry food) when he had the problems at the vets and then after making no difference whatsoever and him not having any wet food (he was of course drinking different cause he had had wet food before this) I started giving him half and half. They have both only had one meal a day early afternoon. I am now doing it in two halfs for my border so as to get him used to it when we give him the jabs. They have told me not to buy a glucometer as they will monitor it there. They will also look to changing his diet after starting on insulin so we are to do nothing different as yet only no treats of biscuits of course. I have cut lots of carrots up in a tub and he is ok with them.buddys_mum wrote: »Good luck with getting an appointment for today, hope it all goes well
The last two mornings I have had no wee and also his drinking is less but he is still very hyper. I wonder if he has a thyroid problem as well. I have always wondered that. No-one really like to treat him there as he is too difficult but he fine at home or should I say, we are used to him lol.0 -
Thanks for that teachergirl. Sorry to hear about your girls too. Big hugs back.:)teachergirl wrote: »marshallka sending you big hugs:grouphug:.
I know it's all difficult right now but you will cope and whippie will enjoy his life whatever happens because it is with you and he loves you. My girls haven't got diabetes but they both have serious heart conditions and need masses of medication. My oldest girl is a grade 5(grade 6 being the absolute worst before.....) I have charts for their meds and we tick when each dog has had whatever pill or tablet it is. It did take awhile to get used to but we've coped. The thing is apart from the fact she is slowing down considerably you would not know there is anything wrong. She barks at the squirrels but running after them is too much effort. I asked the vet if there was anything else I could do , and he said no it was inevitable but just let her enjoy the things she enjoys so that her life is good. (they are both rescue dogs)
Just wanted to let you know I am thinking of you.0 -

Quite agree Marshallka. Have had a cat on Metacam and that caused loads of problems, diabetes being one which appeared and disappeared which I know is strange. Also it may be different with Cats.
I do not trust the vets anyway in as much as they will always sell products for their own pockets if you know what I mean.
We do keep to the same vet and I have nothing but praise for him when he helped to save my pups eye when the cat attacked him last year. On the other hand they have made some serious errors and wrong decisions in the past.
They do not like being questioned though do they? I hope all goes well Marshallka:mad:0 -

My dog was only on Rimadyl a while and does not take them now but I know one of the side effects is liver damage or should I say the biggest. Its noted more in golden retrievers labs. You could never prove anything though could you!! His liver is damaged which they said they would expect with the diabetes.0 -

I really would get that glucose monitor, The monitor it self cost me £11.72 and 50 strips for testing was £25.96. Right then......
A glucose accutrend/Glucometer periodic check = £19.26
Urine analisys dipstick =£3.87
Glucose accutrend/glucometer multiples =£10.47
You wont be charged this every time you go to the vet, but just to give you an idea of charges that i have. You might find that you are going nearly every 7 days to start with just to get the levels right and then progressing upto 10 day visits. The monitor will be handy in case you are worried at all in the middle of the night if he becomes wobbly - is it arthritis or a hypo? Do your own test and ease your mind, saves having to call out the vet for emergancy. This has saved alot of worry for me several times at weekends.
Once he is settled just do your own tests, its been 6 weeks since we seen the vet, although we do goto be weighed every fortnight.0
