Normally when I forget my bags and I buy just a few items I just carry everything and they try and force me to have a bag - this is morrisons though, I don't think the eco-ness has caught up to Morrisons yet.

Just think about it? In respect to the amount of used bags in one year, if they saved by not giving out these bags, they will save probably £1 million pounds.

I bet it's even a hell of a lot more than that, I used to work for a retailer (a lot lot smaller than Tesco - not a supermarket) and when they changed the density/quality of the bags they were saving £300K/year. And thats just changing the manufacturer of the bag, not stopping giving them out!

They are using the enviromental impact as a 'legit' reason to save themselves millions.

This is a government requirement not a Tesco one.

The supermarkets have to reduce the number of free plastic bags they give out, or the government will impose a compulsory plastic bag tax like in Ireland.

But surely the shops could give out paper bags instead? The proposed tax is on plastic bags not bags, right?

Yes they could do that. I would guess that paper bags strong enough for groceries would be much more expensive than the current plastic ones, and no good at all if it rains.

I think the point the OP was getting at, isn't the bag issue, its the lying that went on, No customer deserves to be lied to, as I saw it, the OP wasn't offered ANY free bags even AFTER purchasing a BFL.

But WORSE the cashier felt it right to tell the Op a blatant lie.

The thing which annoys me is that they have a ready supply of boxes which they sell, which they should give out for people to use. I remember as a child having boxes of shopping not bags

You all seem to missing the point, we are doing this to help the environment, not one of you has mentioned this.

    Ahem.
Forgot my bags for life :o <snip> I have no objection if they want to change their policy and stop giving out skinny bags completely, and I do understand the idea of recyclable bags; but I do not expect to be told that they have none, when in fact they do.

Sorry, thought my OP explained this. It wasn't the lack of bags, it was the blatant lie.

I think that's totally uncalled for. She's doing her job, so what gives you the right to call her fat and probably give her a really bad day? Take it up with a manager if you want, but insulting someone who is sitting there for £6 an hour like that is just rude IMO.

Well I do not blame him at all. These pathetic officious jobsworths need to realise who the customer is and who pays their wages. We put up, far too often, with poor service from people and condescending comments from people there to serve us. I have had it sometimes and I am never rude to checkout staff. I have had occasion to complain in the past about it. You don't need it.
