Shopped in Tesco today. Bought some heavy stuff, and a couple of light items.

Forgot my bags for life :o so as I went through the till, I picked up one new B4L (9p) and asked for a skinny bag for the light items.

I was told by the cashier that they had NO skinny bags, all she could offer was another B4L for which I would be charged another 9p. I expressed my incredulity at them having run out, and at being charged for the alternative. In the end, I agreed to pay simply to get through the till (and because Marley was getting embarrassed by my rant!)

On walking past the other tills down to Customer Services, I saw that other tills still had skinny bags and were giving them to customers.

So I went to the Service Desk and complained - I don't expect a Tesco's member of staff to lie to me. I have no objection if they want to change their policy and stop giving out skinny bags completely, and I do understand the idea of recyclable bags; but I do not expect to be told that they have none, when in fact they do.

The CS Manager agreed and refunded the 9p for my unnecessary second bag.

I'm merely venting on here because I cannot believe that cashier lied to me

Again I iterate my view on this, if spotty moldoon says this to me, they can put the stuff back on the shelf.

I was in Asda today and they are giving the bags for life for free, i understand it's only until the end of the week.

I do hope that you're all leaving your pizza boxes and excess packaging on the end of the tills?

Try it. Tesco are REALLY helpful in this regard (not).

A tad OT, but if you use a self service point and have no bag ,nor need one, claim for " NO BAG USED"

I had a song and dance in Tesco the other day. I don't usually do my shopping in there but did because the clubcard points arrived ;).

I had a trolley full of shopping and the delightfully pleasant checkout operative  but two plastic bags out.

Let's just say...further bags we're not easily forthcoming after I had used the measly two that had been put out...and when I did get further bags...I packed extremely slowly and made him wait for me! :rotfl:

Won't be in there next time...back to sainsburys! :rotfl:

Thats pretty much the same as what happened to me on Wednesday. I was packing at MY pace, not very slow, but not fast either, and the checkout assistant kept saying "thats £32.94 please". I did say hold on, I won't be long, but she kept repeating herself .

I can't pack and pay at the same time!

I really don't like Tesco, i'll stick to ASDA in future!

It's funny you should say that as my Tesco apparently ran out of carrier bags the other week as well and were desperately trying to flog me their bags for life as a substitute. I had an entire week's shopping as well, shoved as much as I could in my gym bag (yes I really want my shopping in with my sweaty gym kit) but they weren't prepared to do anything at all to help - in the end they shoved those cages full of boxes out and I nearly hurt myself getting an empty fruit box out to pack into.

  • Who needs them? You just stack the stuff back into the trolley and take it back to the ULTIMATE BEHEMOTH (4x4, 5.7 Litre, 9 seats) that you conveniently parked in the disabled bay, right by the front of the store, so that you do not have far to push the trolley.

Chuck the 48 pack of lager and 12 bottles of wine (12 to get the 5% discount!) in the back, leave the trolley in the road and drive home, park over the neighbours driveway (closer to home) and unload.

Easy! Some people are just so lazy!;)

It's the principle - they were intentionally letting people pack their trollies full of stuff (was a Friday night so hellishly busy) and not letting on till they got to the tills that there were no bags so basically relying upon the fact that everyone would just pay for their bigger bags as there was nothing they could do once they'd got to the front of the queue, had half their shopping scanned and then been told the truth. It was profiteering pure and simple and I'd have had no issues if they'd just stuck a notice on the store doors warning people they'd run out of bags - I'd have just popped home to pick some up.

I did kick up a stink about it though - just the fact they didn't bother telling customers as they went in to the shop but wanted to trap them into having to pay out for their expensive bags instead - got some spotty youth pretending to be the manager that they'd pulled off another checkout trying to fob me off with excuses (do they really think they can pull that one when his name badge says "checkout operative" lol).

As for the environmental issues - mine get reused as bin liners, and go into school where we always need them for kids bringing stuff home, soggy "accident" knickers going home etc etc - they don't go in the bin.

They try that stunt again there are about 4 other supermarkets around here I can go to - and I'll quite happily switch and travel to avoid lousy customer service.

Its actually a very clever strategy what these supermarkets are doing. They are limiting the amount of bags they are giving free in order to save money. Just think about it? In respect to the amount of used bags in one year, if they saved by not giving out these bags, they will save probably £1 million pounds. Instead by charging you for the re-usuable so called environmentally friendly bags (debate....), they make money.

I agree with the above. Don't expect to be lied at and especially when you are a paying customer.

I have noticed that tesco has lost alot of customers recently.
