... Good luck to you all especially Elle and Rhys. I think you are wonderful, the way you have remained so upbeat about everything. Its lovely to read your posts and I love hearing that Rhys is coming on so well.

Aww thankyou for saying so! :) Really hope your LO gets better soon and you're getting the support you need. Hope to see you back here soon xx

Spent a few hours with Rhys tonight. He was asleep when we got there, but we soon sorted that with a few cuddles and a change of nappy and sleepsuit ;)

When I was in Sainsburys earlier, I got a furry blanket with bobbles on - a bit like the bumpy side of bubblewrap. We put that on the changing mat on the floor again to see what he would do.. We had him grabbing handfuls of the blanket and pushing against OH's hand with his feet to shove himself up the mat - had to put him back at the bottom twice! He got grouchy with frustration when trying to push off my arm cos I wasn't strong enough to hold still and he was just pushing me out the way and not moving forward! :o Also did the moving his head from side to side to follow the toy thing again so it wasn't fluke last night ;) He'll hold his head up high so I can easily fit my hand between his chin and the blanket. We had a nurse watch him too so she could see for herself and she seemed very surprised and impressed with him :)

Can anyone recommend a book which lists all the milestone movements babies make? I know it'll probably have "average ages" in it but I don't want it for that - we've been told Rhys will probably be slower in his development - I just want to make sure I know what I'm looking out for. Would you believe, I do actually have a GCSE in Child Development but I can't remember the important stuff now! :(

Speech and Language (he's not *that* advanced! ;)) Therapist coming tomorrow to teach us these exercises. Hopefully he'll suck on his dummy as well then as he did tonight and show them he just needs time not exercises  Apparently we'll also find out from the therapists if they think we should still be trying breastfeeding so I guess I'll have to get my boobs out in front of strangers again! If they want me to carry on trying, I'll be moving back in to the parent flats and be able to have in the room with me :D

this is something that is really worrying me, seth outgrew his moses basket a few weeks ago and has been sleeping in our bed ever since as we didnt have a cot, we now have a cot but its a cot bed and doesnt fit in our flat so as we move in 3 weeks we're waiting til then. but by then its going to be 6-7 weeks he's been sleeping between us and i reckon he's going to be a complete nightmare to settle and will totally refuse to sleep as he wont be between us :( his day naps are already non-existant unless he is cuddled for the duration and he wakes as soon as we move him slightly!
does anyone have any ideas as to what we can do to ease it? he doesnt self settle at all. is it going to have to be controlled crying until he "gets" it?
I suppose it's the same as any sleeping change but of course every child reacts differently. When we got a blow up bed for Alice the first couple of times I stayed in the room cuddling her until she fell asleep (she grabbed me tight when I tried to leave) but then it was gradually reduced to a short cuddle followed by just being in the room and then just staying in the room a couple of minutes reassuring her and then after that she was fine.

mrs tine, your question yesterday got me thinking quite a lot:).... When you talk about it being hard to afford a larger family, did you mean in terms of the things the babies would need or did you mean in loss of income terms because SMP might not go up to the full year next april, or were you thinking of something else?

I'd love others thoughts on what people have found the expensive part of having children to be...

    thanks all for any thoughts!

Lu T I made a blackboard, the glass had broken in a large ikea ribba frame, so I removed the glass and picture and painted the hardboard backing with blackboard paint... Looks really nice! I might put a clock mechanism through it too...:D

I'd say food and carseats have probably been the most expensive things. Almost a third of what we spent on the first year (which includes all prebaby expenses like maternity clothes) was food and carseat and that was only the Gp1 carseat as our parents paid for the Gp0 one.

ooh please do! i've tried googling her stuff but typically i think most of it is under lock and key. i got a free book with a magazine but didnt even read it before i looked at the title and decided it was a bit hippyish for me :o and putting it in a charity bag!! i couldnt see that a baby sleeping could possibly be so much hassle i'd need a book :rotfl::rotfl: regretting that now cos everyone seems to sing her praises, i think shes the only one that people seem to more or less unanimously agree is good!

I think children get more expensive as they get older, and it's no longer cool to wear Primark/Tesco/Asda clothes as they are into brand names. It happens even if you are anti-brand name like me as they want to be like their friends.

Christmas and birthdays get more expensive when they get into electronics and would like consoles and video games or mountain bikes and stuff like that.
Here I go again on my own....

i actually think we manage better money wise since i'm not working :o we have less coming in but i'm not tempted to spend on my lunch break on food or anything else, i dont have petrol or parking costs and i think i'm just generally better with money now. i still have massive amounts of debts from when i was younger to pay at some point but i've put them on hold and i'm trying not to think about that for the time being!!

the only expensive stuff we have are the travel system and the cot bed, although the cot is a present from MIL. unless we count having to move to a house for the extra room!! the biggest ongoing cost is definitely formula, we get through 6 boxes a month at £7.89 each and the price is completely disgusting for something so vitally important!
