Yikes!!! I didn't even realise there were paypal fees, when am I going to get charged these? Is it even worth selling on eBay???

How do my star ratings go down???

p.s. I'm not gouging, just covering my packaging costs!

Nope, not anymore, I stopped selling ages ago, by the time Ebay has taken their initial cut, the percentage of the final sale value and then you get savaged by Paypal it is practically pointless from a one off perspective.

These days I give the stuff to the charity shop, the amount of nausea involved in wrapping and parcelling, and then getting fleeced by Ebay all for a couple of quid just isn't worth it.

I hate eBay with all their sneaky fees and PayPal.

Google needs to open an auction site with honest fees.

I have some stuff that I'm been thinking about selling on Ebay, but after reading this forum I think I'll give them to charity!

Ebay fees and Paypal fees are not sneaky. They are all there on the websites available for viewing by everyone.

If you were to open a bricks & mortar shop, only applicable of course to business sellers, you would have to pay a fortune for rent, business rates, utilities etc.
No way would you get the same amount of people looking at each item in the same time you've listed on ebay for.
Lots of my personal items get 50+ views if listed for 7 days.
You would have to have a shop in a prime location to get that sort of exposure.

Remember the problems you read here are the minority. Most ebay transactions go through with no problem you just don't get people shouting that they had a successful sale or purchase. In reality problems are few and far between. The best way to protect yourself is to know both ebay and paypal T&Cs

So you really think they would be any cheaper and that Google wouldn't want to make money. :rotfl:

I have some baby clothes to sell so they'll be low value. I guess I'll give it a try and if they don't sell they will go to charity. :)
  • I was rather shocked just now by the 10% final value fee on Ebay - and only learnt about PayPal selling fees from this thread, though the PayPal percentage is rather smaller (they say 1.9% to 2.9% + $0.30 USD).

Anyhow, I looked for alternatives and there is uk.ebid.net with no insertion fees and a 3% final value fee. That sounds worth a try and I will try it the next time I have something to sell off.

This is a very old thread and you would do better starting your own thread.

However I'd avoid ebid if you want to sell anything, I'd rather pay 10% of my final price to ebay on a sale than 3% to ebid but never ever sell anything.

Seriously there are no buyers at all on ebid and in fact I'm probably one of th elast people on here still desperately running shops with no sales...just hoping to at least cover my lifetime member fees.
