BEWARE of eBay final value fee of 10.0% for sellers!

I would like to warn all eBay potential seller of their new post March 09 final value fee of 10.0% - have sold over 100 lots on the site I was horrified when my latest invoice came through - instead of a listing fee of approx £20 for three items I sold sucessfully on the site my bill was in excess of £75.00 - one item I sold for £300+ was clobbered with a finalvalue fee of over £30 - I am afraid that my eBaying days are over. The notification of these changes are buried quite deeply on their site and I am afraid I do not always read and respond to their alerts. Thisfollowed a very difficult week when an unauthorised person listed a number of items on my site and opened an eBay shop in my name and a sellers account - it took five very long and involved phone calls with the call centre to sort out the mess - they did give me a £20 voucher to useon the site but the aggravation factor was enormous. They also listed all the fees on my account for the bogus articles even after I had informed them what had happened. I have subsequently been told I was not the only person this happened to in the last couple of weeks - I would like to know if this has happened to anyone else!

Short of driving to every registered users house and stapling the charges to their forhead, I'm not sure that they could have been better publicised.

It was quite clear on the site, I certainly received and email beforehand and you still get an estimate of sale fees when you list.

If you make a choice not to "read their alerts" then I'm afraid you only have yourself to blame.

Ebay final value fees are 10% but on some items i sell once i have taken into account the listing fee, final value fee and paypal fee i have paid closer to 16% of the sale price, including postage cost, obviously the sale price is not 100% profit.

That works out, if i was selling an item at £70 with a gross profit of say £20 per item, ebay are making just over £11 on it i get £9.

    Not cheap by any means.

And while the final value fee is well publicised there is not much mention of the other 6% and how that is factored in, because ebay think we are stupid and will just think, hmmm 10% that's not bad....and many do.....

They are making their fees favor high volume sellers. They don't want ordinary people on their site anymore, except to buy.

"well if you don't like it pal you shouldn’t have opened a royal mail franchise
Subsitute royal mail franchise with ebay account, and you have my feelings on the matter.
Also, it might be a idea to get a higher profit margin as one or two chargebacks will wipe out your profit, and like it or not there are scammers out there, so as sellers it is a cost, like postage that has to be taken into account.

    Oh and OP, seriously?
I'm sorry your account got hacked, but not realising it was now 10%- well you probably should have read that notice.

It's blame culture again- it is not ebays fault you didn't listen to them when they told you things.
This is my opinion. There are many others like it but this is mine

I am a professional ebay seller. I work hard at my job, I love my job, if you think it's silly that's your problem not mine. :p

Firstly Turkish quoting me from a totally unrelated thread where i was not even discussing ebay fees is totally irrelevant.

Secondly, i am not interested in profit margins when it comes to ebay as i only use it now to sell off surplus items from other ventures and without trying to be rude, i really don't need your business advice as i have been running my own business since i was 21 and i am doing just fine thank you.

Thirdly, when i was selling on ebay professionally i was paying them £1,000 a month in fees to sell in a marketplace where sale prices were cut throat, i worked out a long time ago that if i put together a website of my own and spent that £1,000 on ppc marketing i could make as many and often more sales as i did on ebay and achieve a higher gross profit margin.
So i don't think it is me that can't see the woods for the trees and needs advice.

All i was doing in my post above was pointing out that while ebay publicise the 10% final value fee they do little to publicise the true cost of selling on ebay which, as in the example above can be over half that figure again.
And point out that ebay is not a cheap place to sell, admittedly it returns you a huge market place but it is not what it was.

No, it's not- it is a example of how people expect some things from some places, but when it comes to something that affects them, (or sorry used to affect them) they expect it to be reversed.

    Snap :p
But your "advice" is apparently worth more than anyone elses because... well because you are no longer actually selling on ebay that much  Yeah that makes sense

    Why would they "publicise" it?
They don't hide it either though and to be honest it is peoples own responsiblility to find out before they sell stuff, and either accept it or take their items elsewhere.

This is my opinion. There are many others like it but this is mine

It's a symptom of the Jeremy Kyle generation.

ok then, you quoting me out of context from totally unreated threads with totally unrelated topics is relevant, at least in your eyes.

i didn't give any advice i made a comment about the true cost of selling on ebay.

    Why would they "publicise" it?

To give a true example of what it costs to sell on their site, Amazon are expensive too but they at least don't feel the need to conceal part of their fees. You either publicise your true costs or don't publicise any of them, to go half way like ebay do just looks as though they are trying to mislead.

They don't hide it either though and to be honest it is peoples own responsiblility to find out before they sell stuff, and either accept it or take their items elsewhere.

Don't disagree at all, it is down to anyone running a business to know what their costs are, it's often the private sellers that get caught out.

i did accept their fees when i was selling there full time and do now when i sell occasional items there, that doesn't mean i am not entitled to think those fees are high or to express those feelings, i never said anything disparaging about ebay, i just said that the true cost of selling there is often much higher than the well publicised 10% F.V.F. and in my opinion those fees make ebay an expensive place to sell.

Now it's great that you like ebay so passionately but i don't see how the opinion i have expressed here in this thread could offend anybody so much. All i have done is join a discussion about ebay fees and give an example of the difference between the one fee ebay publicise and the true cost of selling there......Who wants to shoot me first?..
