    Hi
my son has just gone to Uni last week, and we have a student loan for him
Unfortunately he didn't get the grades from his BTEC to go straight on to the engineering degree as planned, but he got accepted onto the HND at the same Uni.
My query is, the HND takes a year, he then plans to do the degree (its a feeder course) but what will be the situation with his student loan??
    thanks
    Lou N

How many years will he be doing in total?

    No........
  • Does anybody know if I'd qualify for a student loan under the following circumstances?

Did 2 1/2 years of a 4 year BA in 2005 - 2008 and had to drop out because of a complicated family situation. I went straight into full time employment earning more than the £15K threshold so have been paying the initial loan back for seven years now.

I want to do a part time Open University BA... would I be eligible for a part-time tuition fee loan? Neither the OU or SLC website is clear on whether a previous student loan for an incomplete qualification would be a barrier.

    Thanks in advance.

  • Hi, I need some advice for a friend who has just turned 50.
In 1995, at the age of 30, she started a degree course which she completed 4 years later, financing the course by means of a student loan.
She has been deferring payment due to not earning enough to have to make repayments, and has recently received the deferral application letter for the coming year. However, it is our understanding that the loan is wiped at the age of 50. What is the best way of dealing with this? Inform Erudio? Apply for deferrment and then inform them of the 50 up once recieved, or do nothing?
Any advice or experiences gratefully received.
    Ta.
  • Can't seem to find the answer to this anywhere.

My daughter will be applying for Uni for 2016 start We are not sure how much Maintenance Loan she will get. What constitutes household income - obviously both hubby's and my income but do we include the child tax credits we get and child benefit. (I do know for next year entry they use 2014/5 tax year gross income)

    Many thanks
Thanks to MSE savings we got to go to Disneyworld Florida.

  • Hello,

Can you please advise on the following situation, I recently received a letter from SLC, stating I owed nearly 500 pounds from CCScollect stating they were instructed to recover the amount detailed.

Now I have received no previous contact from SLC and had gone to their website I believe once (over a year ago) to declare I do not receive income above the threshold (I am living abroad and am not a UK national).
It looks like I had not declared income for all the time they required and they instituted automatically that I pay back 100 pounds a month, they assume you make enough to pay this if you have not declared. I tried calling them repeatedly and could not get through to anyone and the only response I got to my emails was that they were routed to the proper department.
I checked my account on the site and it is now showing owing 600 pounds, they seem to be adding 100 pounds each month and I am at a loss at how to address this.

I should say they claim to have tried to contact me repeatedly, though they have my correct address none of their letters have reached me except the last and they also have my correct phone number and email - which I am certain they have not even tried to contact me on. Also can you just claim you have sent a letter to a different country and proceed to award such large fines, the postal system in Bulgaria is not something you can exactly rely upon, especially given the letters weren't even recommended, just ordinary mail.

The issue here is I feel like I am being fined for being poor and uninformed, I am not hiding any revenue and this is not a fine I can frankly repay. Is it reasonable for them to expect this given the fact I don't even make the threshold they require, can you advise what are my options or who I can turn to for advice.

    Thank you in advance.
  • My triplets will be applying to university starting Sept 2016. Any idea how our household income is assessed? Tried reading the Loan, Grant & Tuition Fee Rates for 2016/17 but got lost in the 46 pages therein. Please help!

Hey, i have alot of Knowledge of how the student loans procedure works. If anyone needs any help, i can advise as much general info.
Obviously i cant divulge into specifics due to Data Protection and the fact that i'd get fired, but anything i can help with, just let me know.

Hi just wondered if you could give me advise about student mainentane loans? I started a degree as a mature student last year(46yrs) after being told that there would be lots of other mature students - there wasn't the eldest was 19yrs old. I went to a couple of lectures and it was like being in the classroom back inthe '80's I realised this wasn't for me and dropped out. I had received £1,500 in a maintenance loan - which I had spent on a laptop and other items in prep for my course. I dropped out in October 2014 and never heard anything from student finance until April 2015 asking me to pay all of the loan back. I was under the impression that I wouldn't have to pay this back until I was earning over £21,000 (I currently only earn £10,000) They are making me pay £15.00 a month back to them for the next 8 years or so to clear the debt. No where can I find that if you drop out you have to pay the maintenance loan back unless you earn over £21,000 if I hadn't been miasdvised about the course in the first place I wouldn't be in this predicament now. I just wondered if this is legal and if it is then it needs to be publicised so that others are aware if they drop out early they will have to payback this money back regardless of whether they are earning over £21,000 or not. Can you please advise me?

    Many thanks.
