Yes perfectly acceptable, provided of course you only received the (lower) grant/ loans for those living at home.
You will have to pay it back as and when your income reaches certain levels and you are charged interest.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Can you advise us on Student Loans which are not covered by UCAS, i.e. for performing arts, need to find a way of funding course and living expenses. We have details of the Professional Career and Development Loan but worried that as soon as the course finishes payments have to be made - what if they haven't got a job straight away?0

Hi slc worker, I recently received a letter from the students loan company which asked me to complete an overseas income assessment. I don't live in the uk and I am being supported by husband. On the form they have asked for evidence that I am being supported by a third party, but I don't know how I can provide this. We don't have a joint account and my husband doesn't transfer a fixed amount to me every month. I read somewhere else on this website that a signed letter from him confirming that he is supporting me would be enough, is that true?0

Maybe it is different for SAAS. I'd be willing to wager £10 to a charity of your choice on my version though. The helplines unfortunately have a habit of giving incorrect information, and we often see horror stories of that posted on here.
Let us know how you get on.
I'll pass on the bet. I'll definitely post back here if I do apply for one though. I'm unsure of what's best for me financially at the moment.0 -
Hi
any advice would be amazing.
My daughter only went to university for one year. She then deferred for a year, and started full time employment. She has had no communication with Student finance at all since leaving University until last month when they sent her a statement showing the one year and then three years of monthly interest at approx £10 per month, which has added around £3k to her total.
She has emailed to query this and they have come back saying they believe she graduated in 2014, which is two years after she deferred. Surely if she had graduated, her debt would have shown another two years of loan etc.
Anyway my question is how do we sort this?
Thanks for any advice.

Hi, if anyone can help I'd be so grateful. My daughter went to university when she was 18 and, two years into the course it was discovered she was dyslexic. As she was studying Japanese the university requested she leave the course as she would not be able to get to a high enough standard to graduate. 9 years later she made the decision to try again, this time doing Art, and was accepted on a one year access course. This she has successfully completed and been offered a place at two universities. Now she finds that Student Finance will only offer a loan for one year because of the two years she previously had. She has appealed against this, providing evidence from her past tutor that she had to leave her previous course. Contacting Financial Services has been a joke, her appeal went to complaints, then was filed in the wrong name. Each time she calls she is promised a call back but it never happens. She is running out of time. Any advice please? Many thanks.0

Hi Kate,
Often universities do not provide the correct information to SFE and additional years might be on record if the University hasn't sent through the correct notice. I would firstly advise that your daughter checks her online account to see if the information matches what she believes she studied, if necessary contacting the university to check their records. Notify SFE if there are any changes. Do you believe there is too much interest?0 -

Hi Marina,
Entitlement to funding is based on a calculation which takes into account the duration of the new course and any previous study along with an extra year known as a "gift year". The only way to award additional funding (these rules are set out in the education support regulations, a rather dry document containing government legislation) is via mitigating circumstances. This is normally awarded on the production of sufficient evidence. When this is the case, the more evidence the better; evidence from the university advising that they asked her to leave (I'm a little concerned that they did this, universities have a duty of care and should be providing reasonable adjustments to those with disabilities/SpLDs and in general to students who require support. Alternatively, evidence of the diagnosis of dyslexia from the time alongside a covering letter.
As you are appealing rather than complaining, the appeals route seems the most viable option (if you search for SLC appeals you should find the necessary links) - a complaint would be submitted for certain things bad service/out of SLA service etc. An appeal is made against regulations which is what is happening here.
Hope some of this helps.0 -
I don't think you'd get this on the grounds of appeal, as support for that is what DSA is for. Seems a very odd thing for the university to say, if I'm honest.
Do you have anything in writing from the university?0
