Hi, I wonder if anyone can help me please? Going to the Open university open day in a few weeks and hopefully they can confirm then, but I'd like to know sooner for my own sanity in case I'm chasing the proverbial goose.

I took out a student loan in 2001 and graduated with a BA Hons in 2004.

I now wish to do another degree and should be eligible for the new government initiative which allows tuition fee loan applications from people wishing to study computer science/technology/engineering undergraduate qualifications part time.

My rational brain tells me that this extra loan will get added to my existing student finance (albeit with a different rate of interest) and I shouldn't have to pay extra per month on top of what I'm already paying (9% of earnings over ~17K). It'll just take longer to pay off.

I'm having trouble Googling, probably because I'm using the wrong terms and the SLC website doesn't appear to have an FAQ.

    Any advice greatly appreciated.

No you won't have to make any extra repayments on a monthly basis:

Your 2001 loan is under plan 1 and as it is pre-2006 any balance remaining from this loan gets written off at age 65.

Your new loan will be under plan 2.

See the bottom of this page for how repayment works when you are repaying both a plan 1 and a plan 2 loan:

That's brilliant, thank you so much. Will continue with the pre application study until the open day knowing it isn't in vain :p
Trying to remain free of unsecured debt and build up some savings.

Have done CeFA and CeMAP exams but no longer regulated.
  • Hi. My daughter is due to start a music honours degree next week. Slc have said she is not entitled to help as she previously studied a level 3 btec in health and social care. This was for 6 months age 17 instead of a levels after leaving school. She became ill so did not finish the first year and ended up doing a level 2 apprentice scheme. I'm pretty sure none of the above is higher education. She is 20 and has not attended a university. She has rung slc several times to be told that a btec level 3 was a foundation/ higher course therefore she does not qualify. I know this can not be correct or how did her former fellow students go on to uni?Any advice would really help!
  • Hi.
My daughters mother moved her out to the us 8 years ago and she completed high school education there, graduating with an excellent pass of 3.8.
She has now moved back to the uk (basically she is old enough now to not have to stay with her mother) to live with me and would like to attend university. I have spoken briefly to the Student Loan Company and they say because she has lived outside of the UK fir a period she cannot apply for a student loan in the UK for at least three years and even then there might be issues because of the US connection. This seems totally unfair to me as her status has remained 'normally resident' in the UK, she is a UK citizen (as am I!) and this will really hamper her further education plans. Can you help?!!
  • Hi there, hopefully you'll be able to help us.

I am about to start my second year of a BA Hons, working part time and earning £400 a month.
My partner earns £21k per annum.
I have applied for student finance and am receiving full fees of £5995 and £7788 in maintenance grants and loans.
I have just signed my son up for childcare 1 morning a week for £20.60 per week and would like to know if there is any chance that we would be eligible for assistance with the childcare grant?

    Our expenses per month are
    Rent £460
    Council tax £75
    Food £250
    Petrol £250
    Gas/Electric £40
    Water £25
    TV licence £12.12
    tv/internet/phone £55
    Mobiles £76
    Clothing £60
    Car maintenance £50
    Car Insurance £32.17
    Bank account fee £10
    Home maintenance inc insurance £30
MOT & Car tax (broken down over 12 months) £12
    Childcare £85.83

    Totalling: £1523.12 (£18277.44 per annum).

    Many thanks,
    Anna.
  • Hi,

For the third year running I have received a letter from the Student Loans Company asking me to 'update my details'. As I am not currently employed or receiving benefits HMRC don't hold any details about my income so SLC contact me directly. The last two yearsI had to provide a letter from my partner saying that he was financially supporting me. This time they seem to be looking for even more details. They want a bank statement showing the money he gives me to live on. I feel this is really intrusive. Can they really insist on having this? I am not earning over the threshold for repayments (I am not earning anything). What business is it of theirs how much money I get from my partner?
  • Hi
I took out a sl in 1996. Some repayment were made but then it has been deferred as I don't meet the monthly gross income. When can the loan be wiped out...it's not a lot approx £3k max
    TIA
  • Hi

I wonder if you could help. I've moved abroad and filled out the OVFA. I got a letter back saying I was missing documents, I rang and was told noone could translate my document from Spanish to English which stated my income. I was given an email to send a translation but I've lost it! Can you provide one at all?

    Thanks

If you were under 40 when you took out the loan it'll be wiped out after 25 years or when you reach 50 (whichever comes sooner). If you were over 40, the loan is wiped when you reach 60.

  • Hi
my son has just gone to Uni last week, and we have a student loan for him
Unfortunately he didn't get the grades from his BTEC to go straight on to the engineering degree as planned, but he got accepted onto the HND at the same Uni.
My query is, the HND takes a year, he then plans to do the degree (its a feeder course) but what will be the situation with his student loan??
    thanks
