    Ah!

I don't have my customer number to hand but at least this means I can check when I get home, thank you. Without digging out all of my salary over the last 15 years this may explain why I'm still paying as I suspect there's still a few quid left to go if it's only taken for anything earned over £17,335 per annum my wages for the first few years were under this (which means I probably paid very little off!!)

Thank you so much for your help. From memory it feels as if I've had Student Loan deductions from my salary forever but if this is the threshold it may only have been for the last seven or eight years, in which case I've probably not paid off anywhere near as much as I'd thought!

That is the threshold since 6th April 2015. Previous thresholds can be found here.

Note that from 1998-2005 the threshold was £10,000. It then increased to £15,000 from 6th April 2005 and stayed at that level until 6th April 2012 when it changed by inflation and now goes up every year by inflation. It'll change to £17,495 on 6th April 2016.

I have a student loan, pre 2012. I'm currently a PhD student who occasionally does a few hours invigilation. It would appear that every time I do this, SLC think I've dropped out of my PhD and insist on my sending them all the information again (by post!). Do I have to do this, or is there some way they can get their system to stop it and leave me in peace until I've finished my course?

Hello, hope someone can give me a bit of advice. I have a pre '98 student loan and as I've worked part time since having my children I've deferred my payments for the past few years. At the moment I've been offered full time hours for 9 months to cover a colleagues long term sick leave. This will put me *just* over the limit for deferment when the current period runs out in the summer - but 3-4 months later I'll be back down to part time pay again.

Can you only defer annually? Or can I let them know as soon as my wage drops and start a deferment period from then.

Thanks, just would like to know in advance so I can save extra from the full time hours to cover the rest of the year if need be.
Edited to say my loan is administered by Erudio - don't know if that makes a difference!
  • Hi slcworker,

I was refused the tuition fees loan as I restarted uni and have exhausted (the duration of course + 1) formula. The reason for my interruption in my previous studies was an automatic withdraw under the university disciplinary procedures. I had assurance that I would be allowed to finish my degree but at some point a new Vice Chancellor was appointed and he took an adverse decision not allowing me to resume my studies. Would you consider those circumstances as such that the Compelling Personal Circumstances might be invoked as mitigation and apply for additional funding.
    Thank you
  • Hi slcworker,
I am a 22 year old applying to start university in 2016.
I have been self-financing for 4 years and live with parents.

    My questions are -
    1. Am I classed as a mature student? Or are mature students 25+?
    2. Would student finance calculate my maintenance loan on my income or my parents income? Or both?
    3. Would I be eligible for a direct loan from the university?

    Thank you in advance,

    H

If you've been self supporting (by employment or benefits) for 3 years then you'll be classified as an independent student so that your loan will only be assessed on your own income.

Depending on the university and the course, you might be eligible for a bursary from the university - I've never heard of anywhere giving loans.
  • Hi,

Firstly thank you for answering student loan questions.

Several years ago, when I changed job, the SLC "lost" me and stopped taking payments. I did not notice the error, and I did not receive any notifications for whatever reason (wrong address, lost mail, not sent, who knows...)

This "lost" situation happened for 2-3 years, until I eventually received a letter to my parents address. As soon as I got this letter, I contacted them and started payments again.

Now, I see that I was charged high fees/interest during the years I was not making payments, which I feel a little unfair, as I did not get any reminders.

I also live outside of the UK, if that makes a difference?

Is there anything I can do about this?

    Thank you.

You could try an appeal, but I'm not sure you have any strong grounds to rely on ... However, if you got in touch promptly after the first letter you received you could try that. On the other hand ...
After you changed jobs, you should have noticed that you were no longer suffering a SL deduction and done something about it. The information is on your payslip, along with how much tax and NI you're paying, whether you're in the pension scheme etc.
I'd be gobsmacked if you hadn't signed to say that you would ensure you informed them of any change of address after graduation. If they carried on writing to the address supplied, and never had any 'returned to sender', they don't know if you are no longer there, or if you are ignoring their letters.
When you move abroad, you definitely become responsible for making payments / keeping in touch with them.
Signature removed for peace of mind
  • Hey I am really hoping you can help as I can envisage 000s being in similar situation. I sent the following question to the the appropiate government department and they sent a pitiful reply back which answered nothing. Here is my question:

    To whom it may concern

I have read this paper with great interest and pleasure. I am currently half way through a masters part-time course.

I do have one question though and I think it will be pertinent to a lot of other prospective PG students. It is a point that does not seem to have been covered in this consultation paper.

Regarding repayment of the PG loan, I understand it will be taken from salary concurrently with UG repayments. However, your paper assumes the post-2012 Plan 2 UG model which is 9% after £21k.

What happens with those repaying UG loan under pre-2012 system, Plan 1, which is 9% after 15k? Will this be aligned to 21k also or will the UG element continue at 15k and the PG at 6k along with this?

I believe this will be a similar scenario for plenty of mature students so clarification on this would be welcomed greatly.

^^^^That will apply. As the percentages are the same, you will be paying 9% on anything over 15k.

Once you get to the point where the UG has been completely repaid (or written off due to age criteria etc) then you would only have the PG loan and so would only pay 9% on anything above 21k.
