Hi there,
I've loans from 1990 and 1991 ,held with Honour Student Loans. I rang last week to have it confirmed these should now both be written off (I've been deferring them each year), in fact one should have been last year. I asked for confirmation in writing of this asap rather than having to go through deferment again this year and was told I'd get a call back. I didn't. I rang again, same thing and no call back. I've now emailed. Nothing. I have put in deferment paperwork just in case but am cross that when it so clearly says on their system the write off is due, but somehow can't be actioned then and there, and then no one gets back to me. Any ideas? Thanks0 -

Wondering how the change to the 40% tax band will affect student loans based on parental income? Would make our life easier as between us we are borderline for the maintenance loan starting to drop below covering accommodation and very basic living expenses. Plus it would mean we are more able to help so hopefully a win, win.
Also some clarity over exactly what maintenance loans are given if no parental income is submitted?Truth always poses doubts & questions. Only lies are 100% believable, because they don't need to justify reality. - Carlos Ruiz Zafon, The Labyrinth of the Spirits0 -

Then he won't qualify for a loan.

I didn't notice any plans to change the loans. So lower tax should mean you have more money. Win, win.
You can see what loans are available using this calculator.

It was more to do with the current household parental income placing us borderline to the £43,500 point where the maintenance loan starts to reduce significantly. Hoping this rises to the new £45,000 level. Even then we struggle to help at the level the government expects, because no allowance is made for where you live, which can & does directly impact on relative standard of living.
Nor does the calculator allow for existing courses or siblings. My daughter is in her second year, so it would be more helpful to have a calculator that also works out continuing student loans beyond year 2.Truth always poses doubts & questions. Fromw hat I remember it doesn't matter about tax bands, its just about the gross incomes. So I doubt anything will change. Although as above, it could be raised. Also some clarity over exactly what maintenance loans are given if no parental income is submitted?
The basic maintenance loans. There are calculators on SLC website.
Edit - i didn't see that the calculators seem to be for new students, it didn't used to be like this. very odd.0 -
Need some advice here.
I am a former student with pre-1998 loans.
I have been deferring each year since due to periods of unemployment and being on low-paid work. Currently, I am earning a good £10k less that the current deferment threshold of £28828 (or £2402 per month) and in no position to repay this. I am highly unlikely to earn anywhere near the deferment threshold.
My deferment form came from SLC 3 weeks ago (although my loan has been sold to Honours, I have continued to receive deferment forms from SLC since my loan was sold to Honours) & filled it in along with 3 payslips proving that I was earning considerably less than the threshold, and posted it the following day.
So far I have heard no response. Maybe I'm being paranoid or worrying unnecessarily and have up to now had no trouble in deferring, but starting to get a bit worried that my latest application will be rejected despite sending in evidence that clearly backs my case.
If it did come to that, do I have a right to appeal or make a complaint?
As I said, may be worrying unnecessarily but just need to know where I stand.0
