Quick question re: payment of loans/grants. The SFE paperwork says they are payable on/from Sept 1st but if first semester doesn't start until Oct 1st will they be paid before or after this date?

Maintenance loans/ grants are usually paid a few days after you register as attending at the university in person.

Correct. Payment should be early October.

Sorry what do you mean? Son's uni does registration online (starting from last Thursday - results day )- does that mean he will receive his loan before he actually arrives at uni?

No, as well as registering online, you have to register in person on registration day with your department. It is that "in person" registration that triggers the release of the maintenance loan, so expect it a few days after registration.

  • Going back to my earlier question about student transfers to another university, we have now spoken to our daughter's current uni and they haven't been very helpful.

Am I right in thinking that all transfers must be requested through UCAS? Does the current university actually need to do anything else?
  • Hi, I am new to this forum and would like some advice if possible.

When I was 18 and left school I went on to a university degree course, did 2 years and didn't finish it.

I am now 29 years old and a mature student with a son of nursing, about to go into my third year and all my student support is set up etc.

I have evaluated my life over this past year through my father and mother both passing away within months of each other, and have decided this is not the course for me and wish to change courses to a undergraduate teacher training course and have been offered an interview for a Sept start. I have telephoned the student loans company and they have said I will not be entitled to any student tuition fee loans, or grants or a living expenses loan. Is this the case? And if it is is there any other support or a different way around this issue?
If you can offer any advice I would be most grateful, many thanks x
  • I may be being grossly ignorant here, but I have been on the student finance website, filled it all in for my son, as has he, and have received confirmation of the amount of his Maintenance LOAN without the household income being assessed as at that time they were waiting for some income details from me. I spoke to them. and of course all they would tell me was to get my son to ring to ask for progress and also to ask whether he needs to be means tested. However, there is no mention of anything for his Maintenance GRANT on the letter he received. Does this have to be applied for separately or will this come into play after the means testing. Our income is quite low, and I had thought he would qualify. Or are the grant and loan one and the same, and its all just meant to confuse and confuddle us. ????

If your son has filled in the application to say he wants to be income assessed then the grant bit should follow but this is obviously after you have supplied whatever proof they need from you. Be warned that (In my experience anyway) sometimes they will state that no further evidence is required when they actually DO need further evidence! Basically just keep on top of everything.

Just tagging so I don't forget. I'll check some bits out on this tomorrow, as something nagging me about CCG for two students. 1am is not the time to be scanning things though!

Thanks Taiko, your help is appreciated. I am not sure if you misread my post, or if I didn't write it very well, but it is just my Husband studying, I work Part-Time.

Savvy Sue, thanks for the help. I work 24 hours per week and will try to get extra hours, but up until now it has fitted in well with School hours for our older child. This has all come around in a very short space of time as up until now my Husband had decided if he failed his exams he would not go back again in September. It would have been a shame though as he has worked so hard. He has been applying for part-time work so hopefully we will muddle through. It's such a juggling act with School hours, Nursery fees and trying to work hours to use the least paid childcare possible. It'll be worth the drama in the end though we hope!
