Are we the only people to think it is very confusing and the questions are badly worded?!

I agree the questions are badly worded and imprecise. Give me a tax return to do any day (NEVER thought I would say that, lol)! :rotfl:

Thanks. Do both me and my OH fill out the current year assessment (it is his income that has dropped for 12/13 - mine has stayed much the same) or does he complete this one and I do the PFF2 for 2010/11?

We're not sure on this either. OH thinks his redundancy is not income either.

Yes you both need to complete a separate form as they count 'household' income which presumeably is you and hubbie.

It won't make any difference to the figures if only hubbies has decreased, as that still brings your household income down overall, but you must supply both.:)
  • My DH received a letter from a debt collection company saying that they had been asked to retrieve £1,400 of his student loan. We promptly phoned student loans who said that they had probably done this as he had not sent back his deferment form. We have moved house twice in the last 2 years and have not revived any letters from student loans. We have had mail redirection so we would have recieved it!

We have had another letter this morning saying the debt collectors will be coming to our house in the next few days.

My husband is on a low wage so falls below the threshold for student loan repayment. We can't afford to pay this what can we do?
  • I have a student loan from 93 and 94 which currently needs a gross income of around 28k before repayments I've deferred it every year as I've always been under the threshold. I deferred a couple of months ago and now think I may be over that due to starting a new job after deferring, am I obliged to tell them or is it just at deferment dates?

Also if child tax credit is in my husbands name (he's a stay at home Dad) can I leave it off next years deferment as it's his income?

    TIA

As you were so helpful with my own circumstances, I wonder if you could help establish the entitlements of a friend whose situation is rather different.

Mother and Father are UK born British citizens, living in Spain. Son was born in UK but now lives and goes to school in Spain. They do not have UK address.

Is he classed as a home or EU student? In particular, can he claim maintenance loans/grants on top of his tuition fees?

Mother has other children in the UK and may return to UK when this son is at uni - would this make any difference?

    From the website:

    Where you live
To qualify for student finance as a student from England, you will need to meet all of the residence requirements. Generally, on the first day of the academic year in which your course starts, you must:
be a UK national or have 'settled status' in the UK (under the terms of the Immigration Act 1971)
    be ‘ordinarily resident’ in England
have been 'ordinarily resident' in the UK, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man for the three years immediately before starting the course - and not wholly or mainly for the purpose of receiving full-time education
Students who are settled in the UK may also be eligible if they have exercised a right of residence in the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland before returning to the UK to study.
'Settled status' means that there are no immigration restrictions on how long you can stay in the UK.
You’re 'ordinarily resident' in England if it’s where you normally live, even if you live abroad on a temporary basis. If you move from England with your family overseas due to an armed forces posting you’re also considered ‘ordinarily resident’ in England.

    Does this apply?

    Many thanks

If he returns to the UK before the first day of the first academic year, he will qualify for full loans/grants subject to income assessment. This is because he would be exercising his right to free movement within the EU.

If he returns after the first day of the first academic year, it'll be a fee loan only for the duration.
  • I am re-applying for maintenance loan and i am planning to apply for the full amount. I'm a post 1998 student. i started year 2011/2 and i already have some loan left over that i want to use for mortgage. i work part time 2x a week and f/t in holidays. I dont actually need all the money i will be applying for but i was wondering if its okay to use that money towards savings of a mortgage/deposit? does it make sense?

    THANK YOU :)

Hi, I am starting a PGCE course in September and don't know where to start with student loans. I already have a student loan (from 03 - 08), but I understand that ITT students are still eligible for full student loan support. On the website it says not to start a new application if I am already registered with them - does that mean I use use my old customer reference number when starting my new application?

That's correct, use the old reference number.
