Hello, Do you have any tips for a current MA candidate that has no outstanding debt but is an international student. I am originally from the states and studying in Scotland on scholarship and a small loan would be ideal. Thanks for any advice.0

Student Loans aren't available to postgraduate students and I don't know whether PCDLs are available to non UK citizens but you could enquire.

Hi , my son is due to start his acting degree in September. I have been told that he can only get a loan for £6000 for his 1st year of study leaving me to find a further £2700 this year. Firstly why can he not claim the full amount for his university fees.
Secondly I earn £12500 a year and live with my partner who has no part in my sons upbringing and I pay for everything he requires. The forms request the household income which goes up considerably but then leaves my son without the extra income that he will need to go on his course. Why should my partner pay for a child that is not his and why should my son be discriminated against. He is already staying home as I cannot afford to support him to go away to university.
Would appreciate some information on what I can do.0 -
No idea re first question.
Re second question, you live with your partner who will be contributing to the household income-yes?. Your son lives in the house and benefits from the likes of a roof over his head/food/heat/water etc so your partner does have a part in your son's up bringing. You are claiming that despite living with someone they pay nothing towards rent/mortgage/food/utilities etc!
Why shold your partner pay for a child that is not his-simple he took you on as a partner and children come part of the 'deal'.
Sorry, but I really don't see how your son is being discriminated against. Those rules are there for all students and their parents who are income assessed, do I think all the regulations are fair, absolutely not BUT they apply to all students.0 -
In full agreement with Devildog. It's not discrimination if everyone is treated the same.
On the first part, I imagine he's going to a private institute. As such The Education (Student Support) Regulations 2011 cap the fee entitlement to £6000.
These are the rules, it's just a shame you've left it so late to research this, as the information on that has been available for many months.0 -
Sorry I PM'd you but thanks for nothing then!0

My son has completed 2 years studying in Dundee but may have to transfer south due to circumstances. What fees will he have to pay? The old scheme or the new 2012 scheme?0
-
A properly done transfer, with confirmation from both universities, should mean the old system. Would need to consult with the academic registry at both universities for this.
If he just applies directly, and doesn't obtain the paperwork from each university, it'll be new system.0 -
Hiya, i've just finished a PTTLS course and need to enrol on the diploma to teach in the lifelong learning sector to complete my training, but the fees have risen by over 100% from £950 to £2250. Although its F.E and not uni study could i still get a student loan? we're on a really low income but I'm not in receipt of any qualifying benefits to help with the cost.
Thanks x0 -

You won't be eligible for a student loan but you might be able to get a PCDL, although the conditions are very different.
