    hi guys.

I have been doing a HND BUSINESS curse which lasts for 2 years but have had to resit some modules each year, which means I am on my 4th year, I have just been notified that I will not receieve help with my tuition fees (90 off pound) or receive a maintanance grant (biggets problem), unless I can show extenuating circumstances why I led to a repeat study, now my parents have just been divorced and it has affected my studies. Will this suffice to get a maintanace grant? Or will going to a doctor applying for a stress note about my studies work? (Not a fan of this as I feel it is wasting doctors time)

The main reason I have got myself in a pickle is I thought as I was definitely going to do my 3rd year degree, I thought I could get finance up to 4 years, but this isnt the case as I am just doing a HND course first of all which is just 2 years

Simple I know but it was the mistake I made.

    Thanks

You would only get 4 years funding for a 3 year course plus one "slip up", not for a 2 year course plus 2.

Extenuating circumstances criteria are applied quite strictly so I wouldn't hold out too much hope for this, I'm afraid, particularly in the light of the fact that this has happened twice!
  • yeah true, so next year If I pass my modules this year and decide to do my 'addon' year for a degree will I be helped out with a tuition loan? As theres no way I can pay 3grand? This year is ok as I am only doing 4modules hence I shall be getting a maintanace grant from the SLC (hopefully... as it says in letter today, 'In the meantime you have been assessed for the maintanance loan only')

Also I have forgotton how much this is? Am I right in thinking the mainatance loan is 2grand odd?I live with my Single parent who earns 22.5k a year I live with them at home.

    Thanks for the quick reply
  • HI everyone

    Please can you help.

I am currently studying a Bsc HONS degree in childrens nursing, i started in september 2007 and should qualify in 2010 but i failed my second year so i am retaking it now.

BUT i now have to pay to relearn my second year costing £2200.

Since september i have tried to get finance to cover this but i am still struggling.
I have applied to barclays to get a career development loan but they have refused me as i have a matinence loan from my local council of £500 pound a term to cover living costs. Not sutudent fees.

I have tried my local council but they have said i need to get proof from the Strategic health authority who have said they will not fund relearning. (I am still struggling to get this.) They are also doubtful i will get it.

I have tried to open another account with another bank so i can use the overdraft but that has been refused because i already have an account with barclays with the full overdraft.

I am no longer getting the bursary either.

I am waiting for an application off the co op for a career development loan but who knows what happens there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am really struggling now if any one has any ideas or tips that would be great.

    Thanks everyone

If you do not qualify for the tuition fee loan, you will not get the maintenance grant either.

My understanding of the regulations regarding previous study is that you may not qualify for fee support (or the maintenance grant) for your top-up year due to your previous study. You may want to visit your student services/student union to go through your previous study to check your entitlement. They may also be able to help you apply for CPR for your repeat years.

Have you visited your student services department? They may have some additional funding you could apply for and they may be able to help you with your applications to both SFE & NHS.

You will not qualify for a PCDL when you qualify for funding from SFE as that would class as double funding.

Being declined from several PCDLs will harm your credit rating as will applying for loads of bank accounts so please be careful.

Hi my son started uni this year. He has only just had his figures for his loan and hopefully will get some money paid next week he has been told.

The query is that he thinks they are offering him too much loan (compared to friends). We as his parents provided our income details (about 45K before tax) and he is getting:

    Standard Loan £4910
    Tuition Fee Loan £3225
    Standard Grant £569

    Does this sound about right?

    Thanks
  • That sounds about right. Have a look at this chart, taken from https://www.direct.gov.uk

Household income Maintenance Grant Student Loan for Maintenance Total for 2009/2010
    £25,000 £2,906 £3,497 £6,403
    £30,000 £1,906 £3,997 £5,903
    £34,000 £1,106 £4,397 £5,503
    £40,000 £711 £4,595 £5,306
    £50,020 £50 £4,925 £4,975

    £60,000 No grant £3,564 £3,564

Sorry the columns haven't come out right but I think you'll still be able to make sense of it.

    Thank you Oldernotwiser

How do I find out what the 'recommended' contribution we should/could make as parents? Or is there not a recommendation?

There is no recommended contribution any more; some parents pay vast amounts of money, others pay nothing.

Students from the poorest homes, who would be unlikely to get any help from their parents, would get about £900 pa more than your son so this could be the starting point for negotiations. However, it's very much up to families to decide this sort of thing amongst themselves as there are so many things to be taken into consideration.
