  • I think the money was something to help with course costs. BUt I am paying it back through my wages and have been since around 2005, it was paid to me via the OU, but I am repaying via SLC. It definitely wasnt a bank loan.

    Hi

I recently received my annual statement for student loans taking out over 3 years during the period 1996-1999. It seems there has been a readjustment/restructuring and it would appear as though two of my loans have been paid off. Is this right? Why would this happen? I have always deferred.

    Thanks
    abi

    Hi SLCWorker,

I'd be grateful for some advice, please.

I'm currently a FT student (Undergraduate). However many years ago, between 2002-2005 I was also a FT Undergraduate student (long story!).

Anyway, thanks to reading posts on MSE I've realised that I was wrongly assessed as a 'Dependant' student back then, preventing me from claiming a dependent's grant for my partner who was a full time Further Education student with no income. ('A dependant can't have a dependant').

Prior to returning to study I had self-supported for 3 years (full time job, during which I lived with parent for 2 yrs & partner for 1yr). The SLC at the time told me that 'independent' meant living away from your parents for 3 years - now I find out that isn't actually the case, it's a matter of being 'self-supporting' - FT job, etc.

Is there a way of getting these (very old) applications re-assessed? I'm certain it was the SLC who made the mistake, I provided all the info & complained several times, however I was fobbed off with 'that's the regulations'. I was given the wrong interpretation of 'Independent' at the time, so I gave up.

Is there anything I can do to claim what I should have been paid?
    Many thanks
    Emily xx.

  • Hi,

I've just started my second year at university and I applied for my loan in May. I sent in a paper application as I was having problems with the online system but it seems to have got lost somewhere, as I phoned them up today, to ask where my payment was and they had no record of receiving my application. I had to apply again so I applied online today for a non income tested loan. Please could someone give me an idea of how long it will take before I get paid as I only have enough money for 2 months rent, or 3 if I don't eat.

    hello,

i was wondering if anyone could help me in srting my loan out. I have been in a fda course for the past two years, this year i moved on to the 3rd and final ba year of my course. I have had to apply as a new student this year and it's been hell.

I applied back in May, plenty of time I thought but no, still no loan. I have a 3 year old daughter who has to attend nursery and I have still not recieved a childcare grant, and now I am in serious arrears and have no way of paying for the nursery. I cannot enroll on my course as they said i need the letter from slc to prove i am getting my fees paid. I have spoken to the slc today and they are telling me that they have no idea when my application will be processed and therefore cannot tell me when i will get a date letter, grants, parents learning allowance or anything! I seriously cannot afford to travel to uni, pay bills, eat, get clothes for my daughter, pay the nursery (who have threated to kick my daughter out and make proceedings to get the money back).

My university have told me to pay £500 refundable deposit to enrol but i just dont have that money. I am currently on Income support until my loan comes through, i';ve tried finding work but they are all weekend jobs, which i cant do as i have no one to look after my daughter on weekends. I had sent them my daughter's and my own birth certificates and they cant even tell me if the have got them, but i did send them recorded delivery.

My problem is that they cannot even begin to tell me when i will get a letter through so that i can enrol. I'm sat here in tears now as I've been through so many phone calls, letters and emails an still nothing. I've not had one letter from them letting me know whats going on. I feel like just taking a year out and starting again next year becuase I just cant afford the travel costs of £50 a week, ( I cant get a student oyster card as I'm not enrolled fully yet!).

I don't know what to do from here, I'm totally lost and all they are telling me to do is wait, but I'm getting in to serious money trouble now through no fault of my own.
  • Hey I know you deal with English student loans but can you provide any advice on those of us from across the irish sea. We live in belfast, my son was luck enough to receive the full grant however his letter from student finance said he was also entitled to the student loan. I was trying to encourage him to get it as it would have been helpful for uni cost and possibly put into an account to earn some interest. He declined to do this and advised student finance that he did nt need it. He thought it would have been illegal to have gained interest on it especially as he received the grant.

Would it have been illegal do you know:confused:

Look on " Say No to 0870" the number for Glasgow is on there. an 0141 number (just realised "Dave" has advised that above!")
I tried it yesterday. I've been repaying mine straight from my earnings. It dawned on me that I should have repaid it by now, given the balance of my last statement. However, money is still being sent to the. Turns out this would continue until April f I hadn't realised. Now I need to send them my pay slips and they will refund any overpay. How pants is that!
