Help With Student Loans - HERE!

Mature student accounts with awesome benefits are more or less impossible to get unfortuantely.
However you say he has got less grant etc. than expected, what does his allownace say he gets?
If its just loan then he has been non income assessed and will be dealt with later, if he has grant then I suspect he has been assessed and thats what he is entitled to.
But it would be useful for the amounts shown....
There should be 2 things
Basic Loan: £x
Grant Less Loan: £y
something along those lines.0 -
Thanks Lokolo.
He had an initial letter a couple of weeks ago saying he wasn't financially assessed, and today we got a payment schedule letter..
Standard loan £2458
Standard grant £1106
On the plus side he does get a full tuition fee loan.
If that really is all he's entitled to, then the calculator is seriously misleading! We have no other income at all (aside from child benefit, and possibly tax credits when they can actually process us properly too). He will get a bursary, but that won't start until October, and as far as I was aware was in addition to loans etc.
Thanks again.0 -

What you earn now, and what you earnt in 07/08 are completely different.
When being assessed you are assessed on 07/08, when presumably, he had income, which was taken into account.
What is your household income expected for this year?
What was your household income approx in 07/08?0 -
How can his income for 07/08 possibly be relevant to them?! We certainly have none of it left!!
I got a copy of the "How you are assessed and paid" leaflet, and that appears to say that because he's an independent student (well over 25 lol), then it's only my income as his spouse that's relevant, and that was a big fat zero.
Household income for the year aside from his grant/loan/bursary is fairly minimal - he was employed for only 2 months of the financial year before being made redundant, and his redundancy pay was the statutory minimum only - I don't really want to discuss exact figures, but probably less than £5k.
Edit - sorry, that's for the tax year 09/10, if you mean the academic year then it's solely anything we get from SLC.0 -

Because thats the year they use to income assess students.......
They don't care what you earn this year, as this year isn't what they are income assessing you on.
But I think they have done it a little wrong as it looks as though he is being based on 'Living at Home with Parents' or some such.
Did he apply online?0 -
He did apply online yes.
And whilst I understand what you're saying about that being how they income assess students, he can't get an income like that whilst studying! Seems daft to me.
I've looked on the direct.gov website again and they've updated some information. Looks like it's possible they've given him a minimum to be going on with:
Being assessed for - or paid - less than you expected
If you get an initial payment that’s less than you were expecting, it will have been made to ensure you are paid on time. Your full entitlement will be paid as soon as possible.
I hope that's the case! But it's frustrating as hell not being able to get through to them to find out.
Thanks for your help0 -

Yep the whole 07/08 thing is because it made it easier for people to send in P45s and P60s etc.etc. which were all upto date.
However you can fill in a change of circumstances form and if there is a 15% change then you can be re-assessed based on updated financial income. Which in your case is very likely.
However usually the whole 'basic thing' whereby you get given some money usually ends up being all loans and no grants or anything. Then they sort the grant stuff out at a later date. So it has confuzzled me a little as to why thye have given you any grant if that were the case.
There is a guy called student_advisor - PM him and ask for him to look at your original message. He works for SFE.0 -
hi, can u help my sons student maintence grant has come back as £868 per year this was based on me and my partners income . My partner only moved in with me in July this year. we have had to provide our p60 for the previous tax year 06-07 and 07-08. Problem his grant has been based on those figures and we not together. I understand this years income with be higher but I cannot support him on my income as my partners income does not come into the house. ( due to debt ) and my partner does not even know my son. We thought we doing right by filling in the student application with both our names. Have I done the right thing and can you advise me what to do now - he has no money.

He gets loans and grants.... He isn't just getting £900.
If your new partner has moved in his income is taken into consideration. Even if he doesn't provide.
Plus if the total income is more why are you expecting to get more out of student finance?
He could always get a job if he wants more money.0 -
one more thing my income for this year is £7,000 less due to change of job and hours should i inform them of this or not
