Any advice gratefully recieved thanks!

You need to visit your student services department as soon as possible. They may be able to help you to with your childcare costs while you are waiting for your finances to be sorted out. They may also be able to help you sort your situation with SFE out.

  • Hi

I am not sure if anyone can give me some advice as to where to go next. My son did not find out that he could go to Uni until clearing in August and we applied as soon as he got a place. I filled in my support and sent the necessary documents by the end of August by Special Delivery to ensure that they got there quickly!!

To date there is still no information on the web page - just states that it is waiting for assessment. My son has no money and the 3rd month of his rent is due at the end of November - he has gone to the Uni and they funded part of last month but are now asking for payment of the tuition fees. I am a single parent with a low income and cannot support him as well as run my own household - my direct debits are now bouncing as I had to give him money out of my extremely tight budget.

We have tried ringing repeatedly but get various answers and still no funding!! He has used his small over draft and lived on next to nothing since September but is so worried about money now that he is losing concentration on his course.

I intend to phone them yet again tomorrow and although they wont discuss amounts hopefully we will get some information. I just wondered if anyone has made a complaint against them - looking at the link I have found it looks like the first step is a telephone complaint which I could do tomorrow.

Sorry I am rambling as it is way late and I am a tired worried Mum!

I do hope that you can get it sorted but there's always a good chance that finance will be late if you don't apply until after clearing, which is why students are recommended to apply before they're offered a definite place.

I'm sure that the university will be sympathetic about tuition fees as everyone of your son's age (I'm assuming that he's 18} is eligible to receive support.

Get in touch with your MP - some people here have done that and it seems to have sped things up for them! Could your son contact the bank and plead his case for an increased overdraft limit? Is there any part time work going that he could do to tide him over?

  • The status on my application has changed to 'prepared' and shows the payment date as 18/11. Does this mean the money will actually go into my account on that 11th?
    Thanks.

    No. On the 18th...

It may not go through for 3 working days though, especially if this is your first ever payment.

  • Hi, think I posted in the wrong thread.

Basically, I live and study in Scotland and SAAS gave me the wrong amount, they classed me as living in the parental home and my award was £3989.

Phoned them and they sorted it out so my award now stands at £5123 I think.

What I need to know is how long it takes for this to change my monthly amount?

The girl at SAAS says they contact student loans to let them know but does this take ages?

I'm hoping for my december instalment to be correct. Also, the difference will be backdated so I'm gonna need this for Christmas.

Also - my first instalment was £999 based on my total award of £3989. Is this initial amount different if your award is £5123?

Sorry, lots of questions but I've been skint and have to clear off some bills with this money.
