I am new to Uni this year, and I have just been granted my student fees and a maintenance allowance. Can I still apply for a student loan on top because the maintenance allowance won't be enough. If so where from and do I apply for a top up loan each year, or should I apply for it all at once - sorry for sounding a bit stupid.

I'm really, really, really fed up with the student loan website now - I have been trying to log in all day to check the status of my application - I can't remember the answer to my question (should have written it down!) so I tried to set a new one - it asks me for my surname, DOB, email address and reference number. I type them all in and it says "One or more of the details has not been recognised".

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty certain I haven't got any of those details wrong! The email address I've put in is the one through which I have received emails from SFE before. And I've checked and double checked the reference number against the one on the letters I have received. No such luck. Getting very hacked off with it now!

    Make £2020 in 2020 - £263.78/£2020

    2020 totals
    Swagbucks - £100 | Prolific Academic - £44.54 | Qmee - £10 | PopulusLive - £50

If you can't get back in to your account, you might want to try ringing SFE on 0845 300 5090 (not the best answer, but it does work a lot of the time in these circs); I spend large amounts of my working day "hacking" into accounts with clients/students who can't get back in. There's only been one who couldn't get back in in the end.

Have you been awarded a maintenance loan or a maintenance grant?

If you have been awarded the loan and the grant, you have already been financially assessed and the amount of funding outlined on your notification is the maximum entitlement available.

If you have been awarded the grant only, you have been assessed for the loan and can take that too (complete a maintenance loan request form).

If you have been awarded the loan only, and your notification says "not financially assessed" on the top, you have not yet been assessed for the maintenance grant. The amount of grant you are entitled to depends on your familiy's household income. In many cases at the moment, students are being assessed at this minimum level (even though parents have supplied the relevant financial info) as a temporary measure due to processing delays at SFE. The full assessment will be done when they get round to it.

Remember, you can still go back to your college for advice about entitlement, or ask at the uni you're off to (call them up and have your paperwork to hand).

Cheers! I really just wanted to check on my application as I sent in some paperwork this week - it's not essential, and I'm sure I will get an email or letter if anything needs my attention :) Thank you for your help though!

The only support he can get from the SLC is a reduced rate maintenance loan. NHS eligibility isn't something I know about.

now i haven't been able to look properly through this website but i have a lot to do and not much time. so please help me! my question and situation:

i have never had a credit card or loan. i have had a nationwide flex account for 4 years and only been overdrawn once by £30 years ago, there always has been a regular income in this account. but i still think i will have a very low credit rating. i expect i need a big over draft and may only get £1000 in the 1st year. now if i where to get a student credit card and use it every so often paying it off here and there in full (but purposely/controlled -trying to make myself more attractive to a bank) to "fool" them in giving be a larger overdraft for the next year if i need it and be a little more comfortable does this make sense? is it advisable? and if yes should i take a student card with 17/18% or the capital one classic at 34%? i know it isn't exactly your expertise but could you find out for me please!!!! :-x

ps. my reason for a bigger over draft is that i am a mature student and have to support my 2 kids and husband + mortgage (which luckyly isn't much) and all the other bills. I have a skill for bugeting so i am not looking to use the over draft or credit card unnecessarily but in case of an emergency and going over budget i need it to fall back on.
