hi,not sure if its already been asked but ill ask again....
husband starting uni in sept to do diagnostic radiography... sent of nhs loan form 2 weeks ago, i think its automatic he will get his course fees paid but will he be entitled to a nhs bursery because he married??(i am recieving JSA & housing benefits) if so, how much will he recieve, can he also recieve a maintanence grant from slc or can he not claim both??

A calculator for the NHS Bursary can be found HERE
You can find information about all the funding available via the NHS HERE
If the course is degree level he should also apply to the SLC for student loans. He is unlikely to get the full grants and loans available to students who are not doing an NHS funded course as the NHS bursary is taken into account when calculating entitlement. There is a student finance calculator HERE which I think has a question asking if you are entitled to an NHS bursary in order to help give you a rough estimate.

i have never had a credit card or loan. i have had a nationwide flex account for 4 years and only been overdrawn once by £30 years ago, there always has been a regular income in this account. but i still think i will have a very low credit rating. i expect i need a big over draft and may only get £1000 in the 1st year. now if i where to get a student credit card and use it every so often paying it off here and there in full (but purposely/controlled -trying to make myself more attractive to a bank) to "fool" them in giving be a larger overdraft for the next year if i need it and be a little more comfortable does this make sense? is it advisable? and if yes should i take a student card with 17/18% or the capital one classic at 34%? i know it isn't exactly your expertise but could you find out for me please!!!! :-x

ps. my reason for a bigger over draft is that i am a mature student and have to support my 2 kids and husband + mortgage (which luckyly isn't much) and all the other bills. I have a skill for bugeting so i am not looking to use the over draft or credit card unnecessarily but in case of an emergency and going over budget i need it to fall back on.

Student bank accounts don't care much if you have little credit rating, they're more concerned with bad credit ratings which from your description you do not have. At least that's what I presume as most students are 18 with no credit to their name. What OD facility you get really depends on the bank you apply to as they all have different criteria. I got £1k straightaway with Halifax then increased it to £2500. Getting a credit card in your own name is a way of building a credit rating but you have to be very disciplined and it may not help you in the short term as presumably you want an OD from September? If you are going to set up a DD to pay your credit card off in full each month then the interest rate is irrelevant though I still got the lowesr rate I could when I got my credit card (which I got to gain a credit rating). If you're named on the mortgage and upto date then this will give you a credit rating anyway.
Don't forget to claim for every benefit and student loan you can as these are there to help you budget so you don't have to go into your OD.

why reduced rate?? and what about maintanence grant?

Under The Student Support Regulations 2009, there is a limit on the amount of maintenance loan students can receive is their course attracts an NHS Bursary. Even if you are means-tested out of it, you're only entitled to the reduced rate. Can't find the exact figure, but it's around £2200 outside London, and about £3200 in London.

    Hi

I've applied for my first student loan through SAAS (student awards agency scotland) and have received the award letter and all seems well.

I'm not sure when and how this gets paid? I filled out my bank details but is it a lump sum or monthly?

Can you choose? Also, My course starts September 7th so will I have a payment by then?

I can't remember the details for SAAS. I think they do it monthly?

England its 1/3 payment every term.

You won't get to choose when the payments are and you defiantely won't get the lump sum at the beginning.

You will recieve payments when you start your course.

In England you get your 1st installment within 30 days of enrollment at uni but you should be able to find all the info on their website.

My partner has submitted details online the same day, I know because I sat there while he did it. They did not ask for any supporting information, they didn't even ask for his income details only that he confirmed that he was the partner supporting me for 2009/2010?I shall double check his email and make sure they haven't asked for anything.

I checked his email and they definitely haven't asked for anything, I tried to send a secure mesage but I can't find the link - it appears to have disappeared or have moved to a much less obvious place. My application is still "awaiting assessment" over a week since they sent the email asking about evidence they haven't actually asked for. How do I get in touch with someone to clarify what is going on?

Yes, they have got rid of the send secure message button  You can't even reply to messages already sent and that was still possible 2wks ago. They suck. I think they must be so overwhelmed but that is no excuse

Call 08456 300 50 90 & have your partner at hand as well so you can both ask what is needed - they won't necessarily tell you what your partner needs to do!

I received a letter this morning from Student Finance, saying "We sent you a declaration form on 15/6 but you haven't signed it, here's another one for you to sign, otherwise you won't get your loan". The declaration I received first of all wasn't means tested, so I sent in information a couple of weeks ago to be means tested, but I'm assuming they haven't taken this new info into account - there was no revised information about the amount I will receive. Should I just wait for them to send me details of the revised amount, or should I phone them? My mum reckons I should just sign and send the declaration form that I have now, but I reckon that would say "Yes, I want the non-means tested amount" which I DO NOT! (There is a SUBSTANTIAL difference in the amount I would receive!) Plus I'm under the impression that I won't be able to receive my Erasmus grant in my third year if my loan isn't means tested...?
