Hey, i have alot of Knowledge of how the student loans procedure works. If anyone needs any help, i can advise as much general info.
Obviously i cant divulge into specifics due to Data Protection and the fact that i'd get fired, but anything i can help with, just let me know.
My daughter has a small student loan she dropped out of uni, she is now looking to start a different course can she get another loan. Not yet started to pay anything off the first one.
  • Hi,
I currently have a situation where Student Loans have refused my request to defer repayment because although my salary income does not take me over the threshold by any means, I declared that I am in receipt of Working Tax Credit, which does take me over the threshold.

I have explained to Student Loans that all of the Working Tax Credit I receive only goes to pay towards my child care costs and that I even have to find more money each month to top up the credits to pay a registered childcare provider, so that I CAN go to work. Finding this extra month puts me into further debt each month, but what choice do I have?

The Student Loans Company, say that they do not take into consideration whether Working Tax Credit is used to pay for child care costs and need to start making repayments immediately. So it seems that my honesty in declaring my credits when applying for deferment, has worked against me.

But surely I can not be the only person in this position of whom their salary is below the threshold and who has a child and has to work full time, yet I am still being penalised for this.

Has anybody been in this situation before and if so please could you advise me of what do next or where to seek help to reappeal against this decision? As I am physically unable to make any repayments.

    Thanks.

It depends what year shes in.

She can get course length + 1 year extra support.

So if new course is 3 years, she can get 4 years support. If she has already used 1, then she can get 3 years, if she has already used 2, then she can get 2 years and so fourth. She won't be able to choose what years she gets, it works backwards, so if her course is 3 years and shes got 2 years finance left, she will have her second and third year paid for, but not the first.

How do you mean you've paid too much?

I'm going to start college again in Sept '09 to do a 2 yr national diploma at college. I'm 22 yrs old and live in a rented house and am currently unemployed and claiming housing benefit and JSA.

I had a loan before when i was studying in London that they haven't contacted me about yet.

Can I apply for a grant/loan? Will I still be able to get housing benefit while I am studying?

    Thanks!

Is this a HND or a BTEC National Diploma?

They are completely different. One is higher education, one is further education.

Only higher education courses can get student finance.

Have you told them your current address? If you haven't heard from them, don't you think it is a good idea to contact them?

Hi, I'm currently doing my Geography PGCE and one of the guys of my course said that after 5 years our student loans are cancelled and we get back the money we have already paid off. I personally don't believe this but was hoping it could be true?! Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

There used to be a bonus schem for shortage subjects, although this has gererally been discontinued. I don't think that it was ever this generous!
