Hi there, I have a few questions!!
I'm 23 (will be 24 this year).
I'm applying through clearing for a uni place to start this year. Because this is @ the end of August, how do I organise a student loan and how long will it take to get some money through?
I am not on the electoral roll but am on the council register eg paying C.Tax so will I be able to get help from the LEA?
My credit rating is poor - is it true student loans have nothing to do with this? Also, do I apply for grants via the student loan people?
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

If you've applied normally you can apply for funding without a definite place, but I'm not sure about going through clearing. I'd try and have a bit of money behind you in case the loan/grant is late in coming, which can happen to anyone.
Student Loans aren't credit checked/scored so that won't be a problem.
As you're a mature student, have you contacted the universities that you're hoping to apply to? Sometimes you don't need to wait for clearing and can apply direct, doing the forms later - there's no harm in giving them a ring.0 -
Thanks for those tips; I will ring them.

Hi I am 23 and want to start teacher training in Wales, I am an undergraduate so won't be taking the PGCE route, I'll be doing a BAed course with QTS, what funding will I be entitled to? I have found it so hard getting information, everything seems to be directed at postgrads. I'm single, still live at home, on a low income and my parents are separated.
Can you help? Any advice appreciated!! Thanks.0 -

Have a look at www.direct.gov.uk which will give you all the information you need. Undergraduate teacher training courses are funded the same way as any other first degree.
If you have supported yourself for 3 years you'll be classified as independent and not assessed on your parents' income. The fact that you live at home is irrelevant.0 -
Hi I was wondering is someone can help me.
I graduated in 2005, and worked until 2007, for a salary starting at 18k and rising to 29k when I left. Both of these figures are obviously above the threshold, but during this time (and I have only just realised this), there were no deductions to start paying off my loan.
Whose responsibility was it to start these payments? I see from the website that an employer should only make PAYE deductions if the employee has elected to on the P46 or if HMRC have instructed them to. I forgot to do this and HMRC haven't done anything - so where does this leave me for this period? If HMRC find out, can they demand payment from me? Alternatively, should I seek to make the payment retrospectively to save the interest I've been paying on the higher amount? (thus getting some sort of rebate)
Since 2007 I am a full time student again, and will be starting work this september. For this two year period between 2007-2009, I have been charged interest - do you get charged interest even when you are unwaged? (ie, like any private loan?)
Thanks in advance,
Paul0 -
