Have to agree with alleycat. I buy the catering size bag of Tetley when they are on offer. Last time I bought 1100 bags with 40% extra free - so 1540 in the bag for £11.99, such a good offer I bought two bags (This was from Netto)

With the amount of tea me and the girlfriend drink, we finally just opened the 2nd bag about 3 months after the first!

Wow - you drink 8-9 cups of tea a day each?? (i had to calculate it!)

Out of interest, does anyone know how much a cup of tea costs at home?

If its around 1p a tea bag, and say 10ml milk per cup (about 0.7p), and 5-10g sugar (0.5 - 1p), and heating up water (neg) - that brings it to about 2.2 - 2.7p a cup!! And to think we pay around £1 or so to drink this outside - I think I'll be making better use of my thermos from now on!! Thats where the real savings are to be made
We got rid of the kids. The cat was allergic. ;)

    Debt at LBM (Sep 07): £13,500. Current debt: [STRIKE]£680[/STRIKE] [STRIKE]£480[/STRIKE] [STRIKE]£560[/STRIKE] [STRIKE]£13[/STRIKE] £0 overdraft :D
Current aims - to start building up savings
    1st £1000 in 100 days - £1178.03 :D 2nd £1053.38/£1000 :D 3rd £863.59/£1000 :o

Agreed. And, quite unbelievably, also Fairtrade! It's absolutely certain that every time we have a cup of char Sainburys are paying for at least some of it! That gives us a nice warm fuzzy feeling, lol...

I tried out the Morrisons value equivalent; the tea looked grey in colour and tasted like dust off a building site. How does the Sainsburys cheapo tea compare to any of the leading shop / name brands? I'm considering giving it a try.

Its' all a matter of personal taste, I suppose, but we personally think it's comparable. It's certainly not grey in colour. Of course, significantly, I was the only person in my household who was aware of how cheap the tea was. If you *really* want to get an idea of its quality or otherwise, just don't say anything and put the bags in the tea caddy. That's what I did and not one comment (adverse or complimentary) in a week. A true blind taste test in other words. It's surprising how much we tend to 'review' with our eyes, you know.

    PS It's 28p..what's to lose? :D

"I would think the water has just as much impact on the flavour as anything else "

I can vouch for that. When we moved house to a different part of the country it seriously disrupted our tea-drinking.

We had been Tetley drinkers, everytime we had a cuppa for about 2 weeks after we moved we would both say "what is the matter with this tea?" it just didn't taste right. We shuffled thru 3 or 4 brands to find one that suited our taste with the new water (PG Tips now I'm afraid)

ive now been with hard water for 3 years and still struggling! we filter the water (still have to descale kettle every week though as its so bad here) and still 50% of drinks are undrinkable  i think im going to give sainsburys basics a try and IF its drinkable in our water yorkshire tea in between as a treat.

i prefer to buy fairtrade but the ones ive tried with this water taste terrible - co-ops own make werent so bad but its our water that makes it taste so disgusting.

Now you mention it 8-9 actually seems a bit on the low side maybe I only managed 10 weeks and not 12 :rotfl:.

I don't think you can say negligible for the water heating. Assume 2kw kettle boils for 3 minutes, and assume your brand of electrickery is 10p/KWh thats still about a penny to boil the water too, adding 33% to the price of your cuppa

Oh, no, life's too short to be faffing about spooning loose tea (and wiping up the bits that fall off the spoon), having to strain the tea, deal with the bitty bits you invariably get in the cup, and having to rinse the teapot out 17 times, and then slush water round the sink 23 times to get rid of the leaves when you have finished.

I'd have to absolutely skint to my knickers to goback to that....

my mum's got one of those tea machines that does it all for you - it's like a coffee machine, but makes tea. The tea is absolutely amazing, and for her it's been well worth the money. If i drank tea more often, then I'd deffo have one!

Plus, she gets all the health benefits of drinking green tea and black tea.

    Always working...
