I've just got back from Florida and always just take cash as I can't be bothered with the faff of carrying my passport around to exchange cheques. I got $1.65 when exchanged and was happy with that especially as I only got $1.47 a couple of years ago :)
If you think nobody cares whether you're alive or dead, try missing a couple of mortgage payments.

I have to admit I dont understand more than half of what seems to be posted on this thread :s So this question may have already been answered but can anyone tell me the best place to get my dollars from? Im going in 3 weeks and will be away for a month so Im really hoping for a good rate as ill no doubt spend a fortune!
    I'll probably want over £1000
Am I better getting cash or some kind of travellers cheque?
    Thanks! :)
You bowl like your mother. Unless of course she bowls well, in which case you bowl nothing like her <3 Big Bang Theory :)

Martin has written an excellent article, have a look here :)

It depends how comfortable you are carrying that much cash.
You definitely need some cash and if you get travellers cheques make sure you get $ ones, you can spend tham like cash in shops & restaurants and if the value of the TC is more than the bill you'll get your change in cash. Some people have reported problems with some establishments not accepting TC, but I have not had this problem. I'd say it depends where you're going, if it's a big tourist area like Florida, probably not a problem but if not, possibly more so.

If you have a CC that doesn't charge massive fees (see Martin's article again) you could use that.

I've just bought some dollars this morning from Thomas Cook and the exchange rate I got was $1.60 for £1.00. I've been watching the rate for a while now and it dropped to 1.57 only a few days. 1.60 seems a great rate!

Not sure if it's the right thread to post my question in... but does anyone know what would be the best place to sell american dollars??

I checked banks but the rates don't seem good... Is there anywhere else I could go?

    The amount is around 10K

    Thanks in advance!

The best buyback rate currently shown on TravelMoneyMax is 1.656 ($10,000=£6,040) from Thomas Exchange Global.
