  • 06:42 22May09 Gbp/Usd weighed down by impending GDP data, S&P & Blanchflower

05:42 GMT - [GBP/USD] rose to a fresh 6+ month high of 1.5898 early this morning before retreating back to an intraday low around the 1.5835 level on profit taking as well as on concern on the outcome of the UK Q1 GDP data which is expected to show that the economic situation has worsen from Q4 last year. This along with yest's news that S&P downgraded the UK's credit rating outlook to negative from stable, though they did affirm their current long-term rating of AAA and BOE dove Blanchflower grim prediction that at least one million more people will lose their jobs before unemployment peaks also weighed on the pair.

  • 08:52 22May09 GBP/USD: "Clumped" by Model Funds, 1.5700 Option Expiry Today

[07:51 GBP/USD: "Clumped" by Model Funds, 1.5700 Option Expiry Today] London, May
    22.

Cable has tripped sell stops below 1.5800 en route to an intra-day low of
1.5762, amid talk that it has "clumped" by model funds--who reportedly started
selling in the 1.5850s. There is also talk of some option-related supply re:
    1.5750 and 1.5700 strikes. A decent size 1.5700 strike rolls off at today"s 10am
Eastern NY cut (14:00GMT). There is a huge 1.5700 option expiry on June 2. This
was bought by a fund 72 hours ago.
1.5800 is now a resistance level. 1.5836 was today"s Asian session base.

Option barriers reportedly reside at 1.5900. GBP/USD scaled a six-month peak two
pips shy of 1.5900 in Asia today. 1.5892 was yesterday"s NY afternoon high. There
are more option barriers at 1.6000.

The second estimate of UK Q1 GDP will be unveiled at 08:30GMT. There is a
risk of 0.1% upward revision to minus 1.8%.

Around the 1.58 mark. Got to say I'm happily surprised it is doing well considering the bad news on the economy... s&P, unemployment etc... Thought it would crash.... Proibabaly will now :(
  • 09:39 22May09 MARKET TALK: Sterling Steady After GDP Non-Event

0839 GMT (Dow Jones) Sterling, which succumbed to profit taking early session and
then rallied just prior to the 1Q GDP revision, comes out the other side of the numbers little changed from where it went into them. GBP/USD trades at 1.5822 within the day's range of 1.5890 to 1.5761 while EUR/GBP is at 0.8816. The second reading of 1Q GDP came in unrevised at -1.9% on the quarter and down 4.1% on the year.
