Parents organising students lives

I too find it really strange that parents take part in student related matters in their child's life. I've pretty much been left to make my own choices since i was 16 (now 22) I filled out the EMA form myself when i was in school. Have been filling out bursary/loan forms for the past 4 years myself. I choose where to study and what to study.
When i moved to Dundee i found my accommodation, and paid for it myself with my student loan. I never recieved one penny from my mum, and did not expect to or asked for anything either.
As far as i'm concerned once you turn 16, you do everything for yourself, and if living at home are expected to pay money towards rent/bills/etc.
Just my opinion on the matter, and the way i think, my family thinks, and my friends all think0 -

Personally I think theres a big difference between financial help and life help....
I get a lot of financial help (grandparents are loaded), but I budget for myself, I filled in all loans and forms for myself. I pay my bills, I set up utilities in my first house (which I also found for 5 of us). I get jobs myself etc.0 -
Loko: Exactly, there's nothing wrong with recieving financial help in the form of money, if you are totally aware of exactly how it all works etc... Having your finances totally decided and controlled by your parents however is sheer stupidity. The size of a glory hole in an open pit should not be greater than the cross-section of the haul trucks that dump into it. Otherwise, you are bound to lose a truck, sooner or later. Source: Sergio Cha
I'm sorry for the demon I've become but you should be sorry for the angel you are not.0 -
But then the message that's preached "you're on your own" is completely void if you're receiving financial help from your family. Surely you don't need hand outs if you're an adult who can get a job and work to fund themselves?trying to become a moneysaving student0
