Last week I bought 500g of rindless back bacon SEL £2.27. It went through as £2.98 and it had no price on any of the packs. Paid for my shop and checked my receipt on the way out of the store.I went back up the aisle with my trolley and there was a CS lady there. She looked for me and agreed that it looked like a misprice and told me to go to the desk where I would get a refund. I went to the desk and they tried to get out of it by saying that the bar code was slightly different, but they would refund on this occassion as a matter of goodwill I am sure they were just trying to get out of it. Can anyone explain the bar code system, but from a customer point of view I don't think we should have to scrutinise the bar codes. The SEL edge clearly said 500g tesco rindless back bacon.

I had this very same scenario tonight. The CS girl said that the barcodes didn't match from SEL to product and that it was for rindless bacon.
I must be getting to be a pushover as i couldn't be bothered to argue over this.
I was already getting R+R on Finest Pork Chops that were £6.99Kg on pack and £5.99 on SEL.
I explained to her that the only SEL in front of this bacon was for smoked rindless bacon and that the packs displayed no price whatsoever and that i purchased the bacon on the assumption that the price on the SEL was the correct one.
She wasn't going to budge so when she processed my R+R on the pork chops i asked her to refund the bacon as well as i didn't want it at £2.98 when the SEL said £2.27.

The first set of numbers is the Tesco product number and case size, it will look something like this

    05123456-0008.

These numbers will not normally be on the product at all, they are pretty useless from a customers point of view.

The second, longer number is the items barcode and the SEL revision number and looks like this

    5000436898054/4

Where two different SEL's are displayed, the higher revision number is more likely to be the correct one. So if the higher revision shows a lower price/different offer, chances are that is what it will go through at. From a customers point of view, this is the important number as it allows you to compare the item in your hand to the SEL on the shelf. It is normally safe to check the last 3 digits rather than having to match all 13 numbers.

The single letter on the bottom of the label indicates the order group and the single number indicates the number of facings the item should have on the shelf (both irrelevent from a customers POV)

I know quite a few people have asked this before, and I know that I should technically get an R&R if I am charged the fullprice when there is an expired SEL, but how can I argue this? I am worried that when I go to tell the CS to get the refund, they'll say the SELs expired so its a return and refund to Tesco or nothing. What rights do I have to say they must honour their policy?

I think I would be OK if they offered me the difference, as I could argue that they concede they have overcharged me and hence must honour their policy, but if they only offer the complete refund and return to Tesco of the phone, I don't know how I can argue back. I would appreciate any ideas, as I have an item which has an expired SEL that I bought fror full price tonight?

The policy states that if they charge a higher price than that displayed on the product or shelf, if the pos is out of date that is not your issue it is theirs! Otherwise all shops would still have January sales notices up at Christmas and charging Christmas prices wouldn't they

What amazes me even more than the strange posts that both you and taxiphil have made is that despite this obvious hatred for Tesco you continue to shop there.....if it was my poor old mum i would make sure she went elsewhere or i would volunteer to go elsewhere for her. Seems kind of hypocritical to slate Tesco on one hand yet add to the profits that you commonly complain about.

I don't shop there but I scam them (legally) using R+R at every given opportunity and using their extra points coupons and codes to my full advantage. The day that Tesco close all these loopholes (as I am sure they will some day) is the day I will have no further dealings with them. But right now, I'm profiting from them, and that's the way I like it, uh-huh uh-huh.

I can't "make sure" my mum goes elsewhere - she's her own person and I have to earn a living which means I can't be her full time guardian. I was using my mum as an example of how the more vulnerable people in our society are the ones from whom Tesco make £££millions in Black Profit.

One more thing, could one of you highly educated guys explain how Tesco make extra profit from the overcharges that you are gallantly trying to protect the public from...please?

Are you on a wind-up or something, pal? How can Tesco not make extra profit from overcharges? Where the heck do you think all this extra money ends up? The moon?

Please wake up and smell the coffee. Tesco, amongst many other large corporations, are ruthless, devious money-makers who have no scruples and will stop at nothing in their quest for power and profit.

If overcharging were a criminal offence (which it damn well should be), then Sir Terry Leahy would have been charged with more offences than all the shoplifters who've ever nicked from Tesco in its entire history. (Incidentally, I'd love to see Tesco playing the ignorance card in court - it'd be as plausible as a shoplifter saying "I didn't notice it falling into my pocket".) But sadly we live in a capitalist state where the guys at the very top of these corporations are given knighthoods instead of being put in the dock.

But how can I actually argue this to them? If they simply refuse to offer it, snd I demand the manager, is there anything legally binding that the lower, outdated price must stand?

Extract from first post on this thread:-

Q1. I was charged a different price for an item at the till to the one that was shown on the shelf, what are my rights?

The Consumer Protection Act 1987 makes it an offence for a trader to give a consumer misleading price indications. In the first instance speak to the trader about the differing prices, if you are not satisfied with the response, contact your local authority trading standards department who enforce the Act and who could bring a prosecution against the trader.

Just a brief sysnopsis of Cov

Ricoh has appears to have a number of R&R's and the CS are quite friendly
Cross Point also has a number of R&R's but not so many and CS aren't as friendly.
Cannon Park and Walsgrave both have few R&R's so never worth bothering with.

Can somebody please check Ricoh to see if the Tesco microwave in silver with grill is mispriced.

I'll have a look later (didn't get chance to go last night as the database went down at work and I had to stay and fix it) :(

Will keep you posted. (but will prob be bk here to update u abt 9:30pm) :hello:

It seems that the offer 2 for £3 may have finished on the pavlovas ( certainly the strawberry one) and transferred to the gateaus. The strawberry one in the flashed pack does not scan two for £3 even if you get two, whereas the gateau does. There is an argument that as they are in different freezers they are unconnected. Probably best to get two pavlovas- even if the toffee one works it won't work with the strawberry one.;)
EDIT- in the interests of research I bought two raspberry ones on which the discount was fine.

I don't like pavlovas myself, but OH loves them, so delighted to take advantage of this last night. Also grabbed the last two multi-packs of Maltesers (not in the country, just my local store) where the 2 for £2 didn't kick in, and the good ol' butter-basted whole chicken once again, SEL £2.99, packaging £3.99.

    R&R of £9.87, no probs.
My thanks to the OPs on the pavlovas and Maltesers. Meat gets a bit boring after a while.

When getting R&R's do people have their receipts photocopied by CS like they do in my local Tesco?

no pal, i am not on a wind up. I am simply aware of how the tesco pricing system works and therefore am aware that tesco make no EXTRA profit from the overcharges. I am quite frankly bored with explaining why and how no EXTRA profit is made, if you read through the now 5 threads you will see that i have done it many times. All i will say is that it is not extra money, the price that you are charged is what you would have been charged (addy - i still remember broccoli!!) regardless of the little white or yellow label attached to the shelf that someone has not changed to represent the correct price as programmed into the till system.

I have never claimed otherwise nor am I stupid. What i will say is that accusations of corporate fraud and little men sitting in offices rubbing their hands with glee at customers being overcharged are complete bullcrap.
