Have you checked to make sure your using the right default ip address? Check the router manual.
Alternatively, run a cmd prompt and type ipconfig ENTER.
What does it say for default gateway ?

Ah sorry, I'd read wrongly that you'd already managed to connect to the router.
As above you need to get the laptop to use the ethernet connection.Dave. :wave:0 -

Yep. It will be trying to connect to your Netgear using the wireless connection which isn't set up yet. You need to connect using the ethernet cable to set up the router first.
Did the router not come with an installation CD to help you with the set up?0 -
Look on the bottom of the router and they normally supply router login details.
Typically either http://routerlogin.net or http://192.168.1.1 or http://192.168.0.1 will get you to the login page.
You'll then be asked admin credentials, typically these are simply admin and password. Again check the bottom of your router for a sticker.
Once logged in look for a Setup Wizard to configure the connection for you.
If I were you I'd do all the above connected to the router using an ethernet cable. I'd also disable the wireless for now, is there a button on your laptop with a wireless symbol? If not you can right click the wireless connection (within Start -> Control Panel -> Network Connections). Remember to enable it again once everything is setup.
Finally you'll want to setup WPA or WPA2 security and change the admin password to the router. If you need assistance at this stage just say...0 -

Do I do this connecting to the internet with the old modem in use?0 -
Do I do this connecting to the internet with the old modem in use?
Connect the new router using the Ethernet cable and leave it connected.
You can until you have configured your new router, leave your old modem connected so that you can get advice on here.
Obviously when you want to connect to your ISP with the new router after you have configured it with your username/password etc. you will need to disconnect the phone cable from the modem and connect it to the new router.
Your new router will not connect to the net until you have configured it.
While the new router is connected do, ipconfig /all as post #11 and post the results. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
Some laptops disable the network connection when they are on battery power.
Can you check if yours is enabled.
If you are using Windows XP click start, show all connections and look for the LAN High speed internet connection and check its status. If its disabled, enable it and try your router connection again.
