    Hi...

Peter, obviuosly the MHz rating has to be identical & correct to the spec of the computers motherboard, the MHz rating of the memory in your new Dell PC/Laptop will be right, say 400MHz or 333Mhz etc - the MHz of each of your memory peices MUST match.

Also the capacities/size of the memory must be identical, say 2 x 256 or 2 x 512 for example.

Like I said earlier, if you mix the capacity/size of the memory, say 1 x 256 + 1 x512, you computer will NOT operate at 768MHz, it will operate at the speed of the smallest capacity/size - in this case that would be 256Mhz.

    Sorry for any confusion caused,

    Mark.

    :)

    Hi...

    Regarding upgrading/adding Memory (RAM) .

You can only have matching Memory capacities for your computer to operate correctly and see a boost in performance, IE; 2 x 256 or 2 x 512 etc.

If you mix memory, say 1 x 256 + 1 x 512, your PC/Laptop will only operate at the lowset speed, in this hypophetical case 256.

    HTH,

    Mark.
Really? I bought the 512 ram, and put it with my 256 and it most definately is running much faster than it did on just 256 ram, way faster!

You can fit any size RAM in either slot, and any combination, as long as the total is no more than 2GB.

256 is not the speed, that is the size of RAM memory module.

Speed is not affected unless you mix speeds of DDR2 RAM.
DDR2 400MHz or 533MHz mixed together will not affect the speed of this laptop anyway, as the MBUS speed is only 400MHz

It was way back in the days of SIMM memory that you had to have a matching memory size and speed. Some old Dell Dimension desktops were also a bit fussy on memory.

We have moved on since then :D

    Ooooooooooh, scratch my eyes out,

I was only tyring to help based upon my own personal experience, I shall think twice in future.

I myself wouldnt trust PC-World as far as I could throw them, if anybody is interested in good advice on everything computer related take a peek at the internationally renowned tomshardware.com , also check out pcadvisor.co.uk , they have excellent Help forums.

...and yes Bestyman , your signature says it all.

pcworld.com is nothing to do with pcworld uk

you can mix ram. the size has nothing to do with the speed. if you brought say DDR400 and the laptop runs at DDR333 it would run at the laptops max speed, not the rams.

if you brought DDR200 the whole laptop would either not run or run at the lower speed, including the CPU

however if you have a stick of 256 running at 400DDR and 512 running at 533DDR it would run at 400, which is the CPU's max speed anyway

size has nothing to do with speed, however its bad practice to mix brands, but makes very little differnece

Mark38 you may be thinking of dual channel memory :)

Hi All, I got one of these laptops a couple of weeks ago. Just been looking on my nero info tool to see what discs are supported and noticed it supports dual layer discs! Was anyone aware of this? I checked on the dell site for my model number of the drive and it confirms what my nero info tool says. Here is the site if anyone wants to look http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/storage/P94660/en/intro.htm
Maybe someone can confirm I am correct on this.
