    Hi Lightspeed,

I also have this laptop and am really pleased with it, did you find the ram made much difference to performance? Also are you runnning it alonside the 256? I am looking to order some so would be interested in your comments.

How about dell e-value code 1-N04136 £468.45 Processor is 1.8G 745 but HD is only 40G. Upgrade to 60G HD total is £521.32
Actually a 40Gb HD will be enough for me, I just want to be able to play my email games down in the lounge, all the photos, videos etc will be stored on the desktop PC ;)

I would need the 6 cell battery though, so it comes out at £480.20 delivered

    Hi Paul,

To be honest, I only ran it with the 256MB for maybe half an hour before I added the extra 512MB (just enough to make sure it was all working okay before I started messing about with the hardware!) so don't have much 'before' performance to compare it with.

Having said that, I have noticed it runs quicker - certainly boots up to the desktop quickly, and for the £25 it cost from lowest (link here: http://www.lowestonweb.com/Products/DisplayInfoMain.asp?e=E42351D9-AB2C-478A-9F01-36CA17D9469D ) it was a very cost-effective upgrade. I'm sure Dell wanted more than double the price to upgrade to just 512MB instead of the 768MB I'm now running with!

It's easy enough to fit too - I was a bit nervous about messing around with the innards of my brand new laptop, but it's relatively painless to do. Feel free to let me know if you need any more info!

    Cheers!

    Hi,

Before I start messing about with the innards, do you recall how many memory slots there are?? I bought the one with 512 and was wondering if tis is 2 x 256 or 1 x 512. I was thinking of adding another 256 or 512 if I have the slots?

    Thanks

There was the option when you bought it to get either 2x256 or 1x512. I think there is only one spare slot but if you want to upgrade you can get a 512 and replace the 256 making 768.

    Hi...

    Regarding upgrading/adding Memory (RAM) .

You can only have matching Memory capacities for your computer to operate correctly and see a boost in performance, IE; 2 x 256 or 2 x 512 etc.

If you mix memory, say 1 x 256 + 1 x 512, your PC/Laptop will only operate at the lowset speed, in this hypophetical case 256.

    HTH,

Sorry to seem thick but arn't these memory capacities? I alwaye thought that providing the memory is at the same speed then there will be a noticable improvment in computer performance. If you use different speed memory then it will all operate at the lowest rate.
