Your not missing anything...its like printer manufactures, sell the item cheap and make money back on the consumables. In Dells case, its sell the unit low and make the money on the upgrades, especially as most people don't like to fit things themself they can make a killing on selling upgrades like memory

Er - no. Why would you get a discount?

Well because if I didn't want it, I wouldn't want to pay for it.

does anyone know if there's any reason to get the additional ram through dell, or is it better to get this separately? can see 1gb of ram on dabs.com from £65 for DDR2 SDRAM.

it's £240 with dell! am i missing something here? i know dell make their money on upgrades, but would it be difficult to sort this out independently (i.e just buy the base unit and sort out upgrades myself)? thanks.

    erm...maybe you don't need 1GB?

Most users will be fine with 512MB, so will just need to add a 256MB stick to the existing 256MB one. Otherwise consider adding an extra 512MB stick to make 768MB.

To check how much RAM is actually in use at any one time on your machine, click CTRL, Alt and Del. Under 'Performance', there is a box which shows 'Physical Memory (K)' which shows the total, in use and available RAM.

BTW laptop memory is usually 200pin ;)

I don't think this laptop has got either Bluetooth or Infra-red. For many people these won't matter (and you can always convert one of the USB's into one or the other if you really want) but neverthless I would miss having neither of these. I regularly use these to quickly copy over my pictures from my mobile phone, or Compaq/HP Ipaq etc. The infrared/bluetooth dongles can indeed be bought for less than £20 but it's nicver built-in and there aren't many laptops without these nowadays (having said that there aren't many laptops for £289 though!!! ;) )

1GB isn't really necessary unless you are going to do serious photo or video editing, or expect to have lots of programs open at once, or are playing serious games like Half-Life2 etc. 512MB is usually enough for most people (although I have 1GB in a couple of my PCs).

i have 512mb (2*256mb) in my current old skool lap top. i use a lot of applications at the same time and i've recently found that i'm getting random crashes during heavy use. you may be right about 1gb being excessive, but 512mb has not been enough for me recently. might be something to do with using a 4yr old lap top too i suppose. :D

What is the graphics card in these things? No information is given on the dell page.

What sort of games do you think would run after a 512 mem upgrade?
