That's for non-identical twins; identical twins is where a fertilised egg splits in two, I think.
The ability of skinny old ladies to carry huge loads is phenomenal. An ant can carry one hundred times its own weight, but there is no known limit to the lifting power of the average tiny eighty-year-old Spanish peasant grandmother.

boy/girl ones are non identical (soz couldn't resist :p ). yes that's right non identical ones are 2 eggs, identical (always same sex) are when an egg splits in two.

What I meant what was I wondered if someone releasing 2 eggs within the same month but more than a few days apart could also result in fraternal (non identical) twins, fertilised on 2 seperate occassions or not.

Hmmm ... dunno. (Not a medical expert by a long shot ;)

ahh well someone else might. You can't get pregnant when you are pregnant and I know from sisters twins that 2 eggs were released seperately but within a few days of each other so I've also assummed they were fertilised on the same occassion (bit awkward to actually ask sis though) but I wondered if there was an interim. Thanks for answering though

What contraception was available years ago? I've always found it fascinateing that my gran on one side was only one of 2 but the other one of 12 and they are both the same age. Likewise mum is one of 2 and MIL one of 7, so gran and g-gran were obviously using something reliable and I've always wondered what-too shy to ask and don't know that gan would tell me anyway.

Abstinence and condoms probably. Maybe douching with vinegar or something. Unless you do like the ancient Egyptians and insert pebbles and crocodile dung!

Thumbs down for Rhythm method! I bought the thermometer, the charts, spoke to family planning woman, used condoms for 6 cycles before trying it out for real, and guess what? I have a 3 month old!!

The rhythm method didn't work for me either...........but I only tried it in reverse.;)

When trying to conceive our second child after nine months and no joy, we resorted to charts and themometers with both of us looking sideways at one an other wondering why it wasn't 'happening'. Another six months and still nothing...then it was March. Well conceiving in March was a serious no no as it would have meant a Christmas baby and I didn't want to land any poor child with a Christmas birthday.

So we passed on the charts, the themometers and the worrying, we relaxed .....and guess what we got? A lovely Christmas present who loves having his birthday in Christmas week! :)

Hmm, I just posted a long message and it seems to have vanished; hope it might appear soon.

In the meantime have a look here:

I was on the pill before stopping it to have my first child. didn't want to use it any more (depression etc) so changed to a diaphragm (sp?) which I found absolutely fine, & used one until stopping to conceive my second

during the time I was using the diaphragm, I discovered something really interesting. I could actually feel when I ovulated. I'd never noticed before because I was on the pill for a long time, & conceived very quickly after stopping it, so my body hadn't been in a natural cycle for any length of time in years & years

anyway, I used my awareness of when I was fertile to plan our last child, we avoided full sex during the 'danger' times (had plenty of other fun though ;)) & when we were ready, conceived him after 2 months trying & he was born just when we'd wanted, late spring :)

obviously it's not something I'd recommend if getting pregnant would be a disaster (my husband went for the snip after that one) but if you have this awareness of your body's cycle, it could be a useful adjunct to the more conventional rythm methods

I believe the Germans even have a word for the phenomenon, it's a great long word that means 'middle cycle pain/discomfort' or something like that

It's when you are trying for a second one and nothing happens for years that you wonder why you bothered being so careful. Though when I wasn't trying my coil let me down. (worst possible time, husband just made redundant - but still part of me thought yesss). Sadly miscarried when the coil was removed but that got me broody again for another one who as I say, took her time showing up. made me realise that the conventional wisdom about cycles isn't all there is to it. I now realise I ovulated late in every cycle and if I had relied on natural birth control I would have had a tribe by now
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!
