What a ridiculous post. Firefox and Opera follow web standards more closely than Internet Explorer.

I use IE 8. I specifically have only used that card once, on that website. It had never been used before.

The attempts at verification took place on the very same day that I presented the card.

The company(Micro P) made a statement that they would make the site secure on the 13th. I made my order on the 9th.

I connect via ethernet and am double firewalled, via Router and the latest version of ESET Smart Security. Vista fully updated. The problem was with that website. 100%.

    I agree with you Donnie,

I always use my bank card to purchase on the web and never had any problems.

Purchased this dongle and my account has now been froze due to account fraud of 3 western union transfers all for different amounts.. my neighbour also purchased one on my recommendation and guess what her account has been party to fraud also!!

So for all those who are doubting Donnie... I would seriously double check your accounts and be thankful for the advice people share and take it inot consideration before you jump down their throats!!

There is nothing wrong with the secuity on this 3dongle4free site. What they have done is mistakenly put the secure payment page inside a frame, instead it should either go to a new page or open a new window. Which is why the padlock doesn't appear on your screen and it appears like a bongus site. If when you get to the payment page you right click on a clear (i.e no graphics text or boxes) part around where it asks you to enter payment details for protox then click properties it will tell you the connection is encrypted and secure!.

It's just a minor technicality, Micro P or any third party have no way of getting your details. Though obviously it wants sorting out as people are thinking its a fraudulent website.

Read through the thread before posting. Micro P admitted that there was no security on the website and that they would sort it by the 13th. So anyone who purchased before then had no protection.

It is no coincidence that people are having strange transactions on their card accounts.
Prior to the Micro P transaction I had not used that particular card, ever.

On the same day that I purchased the dongle, there were attempts to verify the card on a gambling website in the USA and strangely, for fuel oil(though that may be a labelling mistake by the bank).

Either way, my bank contacted me promptly about the unusual transactions.

I have read through the thread, and checked the security myself before ordering, I ordered on the 12th. The Protox payment page is secure. As I've said in my post above, a right click on the payment page shows a valid certificate and the page is encrypted to Protox who provide the payment processing.

I know about HTML and you are not supposed to put a secure page inside a frame on a non-secure site, which causes the padlock not to display. Nevertheless the content entered into the secure page still remains secure unless additional code is added to the main frame page which is logging the keystrokes and sending it elsewhere which I would have thought unlikely from a reputable firm.

Nevertheless, If someone has bought something off an unprotected page and not taken appropriate precautions then that is their own stupid fault for compromising their security on the hope of a bargain, everybody knows you don't give your bank details away on unsecured pages. You should have used a single use prepaid card with a limit of £5 to pay for the item if you had your doubts (as I did) or failing that not bothered to get one at all.

The fact your cards have been used for fraudulent transactions could be a coincidence, criminals use number range sequencers to 'hit' working card numbers.

At the end of the day, you've got the dongle, sadly you've been a victim of card fraud but you've cancelled the card and are getting a new one from the bank and the transactions refunded. Wheres the problem?.
  • After reading most of the post, I am now very confused

    What i want to know is;
    • What is the cheapest Mobile broadband provider to use if I were to unlock this USB dongle? - And who has the best deals
    • People are mentioning about 02 etc... how do I go about getting these sim cards?
    • How do I go about unlocking this USB dongle?
    Many Thanks

If you had read through the thread as you claim, you would have noted that I knew about the lack of security, so deliberately used a card that hadn't been used before in order to test the integrity of the payment page.

What an amazing coincidence! A card that had been in my possession for close to a year, but had never been used, suddenly get fraudulent transactions taking place on the very same day that it was used on the unsecured website for the dongle.

Maybe you think that you are being smart in posting your conjecture. But if you had even half the intelligence that you thought that you had, you would realise that I am highlighting the information in the case that others had used their Debit cards on the website.

As to your nonsense about obtaining a prepaid single use card in order to purchase a mobile dongle..... do you actually have any friends? If you did they would have surely advised you against writing such embarrassing nonsense.

Most, as I did would just order the item and then order a new card and number.
My main bank cards remain unaffected...because I chose not to use any of them on such a website. Poorly constructed and unsafe.

Thanks for your input, but it's mostly useless for those who already have fraudulent transactions on their accounts.

Just so that you know, it's Protx, not Protox and has long since been renamed to SagePay. But of course, you knew that.

    1. It depends what you want it for, if you want to use it on odd days in the month then O2 is the best deal as you can pay £2 for any individual full day you want to use it. You get a 500MB download allowance for your £2 which is enough for most people. Alternatively with Vodafone you can pay £15 for 1GB of data and this doesn't expire so you can use it when you want. With three it's £10/month for 1GB this is good value if you are using this as your main broadband and will use it consistantly every month.

    2. These sim cards are on Ebay and are meant for the IPhone but work in the dongles, they include unlimited browsing for 12 months. Just look for Iphone SIM on ebay. However o2 have been cracking down on people using these sims in dongles rather than an IPhone and if they catch you they will remove the add on so buying the SIM might turn out to be a waste of money.

    3. For the 3 modem there is a link posted earlier in this thread which allows you to flash the dongle in order to unlock it for free. For the O2 dongle it may already come unlocked, if it doesn't then there will be 'paid' services that will unlock this dongle for you.

What bargains83 neglected to mention is the you cannot buy the Vodafone SIM on it's own.

Martin and this thread has mention of it being £5 per month with '3'.

Maybe you can peruse the thread, like some like to say that they have done. :)

I'd like to know more about this £5 per month with 3. i already have a dongle, and already use it. But its not clear what the requirements for using it actually are.
