It depends on how much data you use rather than the time spent online. For instance you could download this page and look it for 1 minute or 1 hour and it will cost the same. The networks give rough guides of how much usage you will get for your allowance.

No, you don't have to top up each month.

You do (with 3) IF you want to use it EVERY month

You don't have to top up each month. You can load up the sim and then buy monthly add-ons as you need them. If you want a dongle for regular use then you may well be better off with a contract.

I think it's a  of terms and what was actually meant.

Monthly add-on is exactly the same as a Top-up each month.

    For 3 it's £10, £15 or £20 for 1gb, 3gb of 7gb

However I think point3 was trying to say thay you are not FORCED to buy a top-up/add-on EACH & EVERY month.

I was saying that you have to buy a top-up each month IF you want to use it EVERY month.
This is because that each top-up whilst having a fixed maximum data allowance, there is also a maximum time period that that allowance is actually available for - namely 30days

Activate a £20 top-up on June 1st and your 7gb has all gone by July 1st even if you never connected the dongle to your PC at all during the month of June

point3 I think was pointing out that you can buy a top-up for June and then you can miss July & August (assuming you don't need access by the dongle during this period) and then buy another add-on in September.

That is, add-ons don't have to bought continuously or contiguously !!! Otherwise that would be the same as a contract

iPhone SIM...how does it work? Is it a PAYG item? Hope I haven't missed an earlier explanation. :)

Yes, and you can do it for free too:

Everything you need to unlock this dongle can be found here:

Just download the files and follow the instructions. The dialling code is always *99# no matter which provider you are using.

The iphone thing is quite simple - pick up an iphone PAYG sim off ebay (will say it comes with 12 months free internet access and cloud wifi use), stick it in an unlocked mobile to register and top it up with £10, then stick it in your broadband modem for 12 months free access. Only thing is, o2 are getting wise to this and can cut you off at any time if they spot you aren't using the sim in an iphone.

This method works by the flashing the firmware to Globe Telecom's software for the ZTE MF626 modem if you wonder why the stick doesn't behave as a 3 device any more. Globe is based in the Philippines.
