You state that you have an 8 year old PC that works perfectly for word processing and surfing the internet..
awesome... you got it free as well.. even better..
i have a Apple Laptop that is 8 years old, that works perfectly for word processing and surfing the internet, it cost me £197.. so really really really expensive..
and yes.. it was brand new!! (ex display, end of line!)
however, i really can't use a computer just for word processing and surfing the internet. My computer is a workhorse and always will be..
currently, my laptop is hooked up to my tv, and streaming HD video so i can watch the baseball.
it's doubful that any computer at 8 years old can run photoshop/illustrator, which i need for my business and my main job.
anyway.. this conversation seems to be going the way all conversations go about apple, windows, linux..
i'll leave you to it0 -

True and thats why I have my newer rig that can play the latest games no probs, and if I wanted to edit photos, movies etc that'd be fine too.anyway.. this conversation seems to be going the way all conversations go about apple, windows, linux..

I must add when comparing old computers performance you should have similar prices at time of purchase and similar ages, A topend expensive Mac aged 8 years vs a mid range PC aged 8 years is never going to be fair.
I can't see how a PC or Mac can last longer than each other. My nephew has a PC I bought 10 years ago and its still doing everything it did when I bought it very well. On the same front I would guess a ten year old Mac would also struggle for what I want it to do right now.
On the same point of you have to upgrade a PC but not a Mac I don't see how this applies? Personally I upgrade my PC every once in a while being a gamer, one upgrade was going from 2GB Ram to 4GB Ram, now are you saying that a Mac for the same hardware specs wouldn't also need that same upgrade to do the same tasks?
I have never had any problems with any PC's I have owned, I have never tripped over any power cables and my PC has firewire. It looks great in my opinion and when that opinion changes I will just change it.Have my first business premises (+4th business) 01/11/2017

You can get a G3 iMac from eBay for less than £100 (there's a pink one on there atm with a Buy It Now price of £49.99). It'll run OS X 10.4 (not the latest, but still very serviceable) and do all the tootling about on the internet you could ever want. Not bad for an almost 10 year old computer.
If I weren't moving countries in 3 weeks, I'd consider buying one myself and sticking it in the kitchen.0 -

It's to do with the build quality. Apple's is generally very good, whereas other PC manufacturers are often highly variable, even within the same brand.
I would assume an £800 Acer would be better put together than a £300 Acer.0 -

My second system is a little over 7 years old (with later RAM upgrades) and runs CS3 Design Standard on Windows XP happily enough.0 -
I run CS2 premium and some CS3 components on my 7 year old Power Mac G4 MDD, they run nicely. I use photoshop every day of the week, and Illustrator and InDesign frequently. It's had RAM and HD upgrades.
I run older versions of Photoshop on a similar aged P4 PC, but it's not fast enough to run CS3 IMO.0 -

Are you saying your 8yr old apple laptop is streaming HD video?
nooo... the 8yr old laptop sits in a draw and doesn't get used.. but it could if i needed it... always good to have a spare...
as for my current laptop, it's 3 years old, and streams HD video from the t'internet just fine.. but anything with a core duo, and a decent graphics card would be able to handle that... oh, and internet that is fast...
