How is its screen resolution and Brightness? Does it have an LED backlight? Hows its graphics card? What's its battery life like? How easy is it to scratch/break/dent? Can you trip over its power cable? How comfortable is it to type on the keyboard? What size is the trackpad? Does it have a multi-touch trackpad? What's the build quality like? How does it close? Is it held shut magnetically, or does it have a horrible little clasp?
Does it have any FireWire ports? How about an optical-out? What size and weight is it? Is it a centimetre thicker and half a kilogram heavier? What about customer support? How much will you get if you decide to sell it and upgrade in 3 years? How about bundled software? I take it that it includes Vista Ultimate (as you get the full version of OS X with a Mac)?
I don't have all that but I have a girlfriend so don't need to worry about all that.Have my first business premises (+4th business) 01/11/2017

So the extra 800 is for a couple of gfx cards, aluminium case and backlit keyboard. Still not convinced.
I spent five minutes on ebuyer finding a similar spec'ed laptop I'm sure if I looked hard enough I'd find one still cheaper with better specs than the mac.
because you want it without software! and as the mac runs osx out of the box and lets you DUAL boot (not wipe and only have linux) you are still paying for plenty of amazing software that you don't get on windows as standard, and i think it's worked out somewhere, would cost in the region of £600 to buy something equivalent..
so you're £800 argument, has dropped to £200, (you do get the software, and can only dual boot a mac remember!)...
now obviously you love you linux, and only want a box to run it.. but i want something that will survive a knock or a drop, or a little stand upon, like my MBP has for the past 3 years and it is still working... that plastic acer won't survive !!!!!

Well, lol, I think that's a pretty simplistic over-view. There's no such thing as "Linux" insofar as there are many many different distros. Pick any one of them and Mac OS X will be better in some ways and not as good in others. It's pretty silly trying to pretend that Linux is all-powerful and OS X is a nice try but somehow flawed.
When did you read me saying that linux is all powerful and OSX is a nice try?? Or is that you putting words in my mouth again. All I said about linux is true, it is faster and more secure.
But, I do have to say that I'm yet to hear the "wow!" from people switching from Windows to Linux that I hear from people switching from Windows to a Mac.
You sound like Microsoft!!! You would have heard it from me when I found a free OS that can do everything windows can do, and you dont have to pay for anything to do it. At the time I didn't even know about OSX etc, I only knew windows, what a breath of fresh air.
Having played with OSX I dont see what else it offers me above and beyond what I get with a free OS. (Note I said "offers me" because I wouldn't want you thinking I'm knocking OSX)

LOL, how would I know any of that? I dont own it. What has tripping over the power cable got to do with anything?? Do mac come with power cables that move out of your way?

What is it with firewire??? I dont use anything that uses it, usb is better. Again you're asking question that an owner would know. I've also never used customer support for anything to date are you saying I'll need it with a mac? I've also mentioned in the past that I very rarely try to sell on an old PC. PC buyers dont want to buy outdated hardware, Mac buyers dont mind. And I mentioned software is not an issue for me.
I'm a half full guy the extra weight will keep me fitter.:rotfl:
Because when you pay less, you don't get more.
Just because you pay more doesn't make it better.0 -

I believe the laptop would run windows out of the box. And I can dual boot windows, its what I do on my gaming rig so I can play games on windows and do everything else on linux. Macs arent the only things that can dual boot.
What exactly is this software that I desperately need out of the box that I cant get with linux, or with an hour searching on the internet for a free alternative on windows.now obviously you love you linux, and only want a box to run it.. but i want something that will survive a knock or a drop, or a little stand upon, like my MBP has for the past 3 years and it is still working... that plastic acer won't survive !!!!!
This is it isn't it, its down to personal preference. And since I've been a cheap skate for ages and swear buy acers for cheap laptops I can also say that acers are well made and mine have survived all you mentioned above and a 2 yr old dropping one down the stairs, admittedly it was lucky the screen didnt break.0 -
The firewire can be useful as I use it for my camcorder, but it is a dying thing really. USB may be not as good but esata is really taking that now anyway.
The power power cable thing is easy... don't be a muppet.
As for the super case, it doesn't do anything a good old plastic one doesn't. But the plastic may be 1mm out at some point.
As always I am not saying Macs are bad computers just over priced, they get away with it because they are the 'cool' computers. Lets be honest apple would have gone under if it wasn't for the imac which sold loads because it was in a range of colours.Have my first business premises (+4th business) 01/11/2017

USB 3 is better and cheaper to produce than esata and firewire and should be out soon.0

So every Linux distro is faster and more secure than Mac OS X?
All I said was your comments were simplistic, which is true.
I can't find a comparison of Ubuntu 9 and OS X, but this comparison using Ubuntu 8 from last year would suggest they're pretty evenly matched, with Ubuntu being better at some things, and OS X being better than others.
Mac OS X 10.6 is coming out soon though, and by all accounts, it's very very very very fast. You sound like Microsoft!!! You would have heard it from me when I found a free OS that can do everything windows can do, and you dont have to pay for anything to do it. At the time I didn't even know about OSX etc, I only knew windows, what a breath of fresh air.
I'm not surprised, I felt the same way when I ditched Windows and used Fedora; I can't say anyone else I know has ever felt the same way though.Having played with OSX I dont see what else it offers me above and beyond what I get with a free OS. (Note I said "offers me" because I wouldn't want you thinking I'm knocking OSX)
Well, that's where personal choice comes in. I use Logic and Aperture a lot, which are both miles ahead of anything available on Linux. I also appreciate iLife.
I find Mac OS X easier to use, and I like having a computer made by the same people who make the OS that runs on it.LOL, how would I know any of that? I dont own it.
But you're the one comparing it to a MacBook Pro and concluding its better value. What has tripping over the power cable got to do with anything?? Do mac come with power cables that move out of your way?
They have power cables that attach magnetically. If you pull on it, it pops off, leaving your laptop where it was. What is it with firewire??? I dont use anything that uses it, usb is better.
I use FireWire for lots of things. USB 2 is much slower.
In fact, there are things out there, that will only connect via FireWire, because USB can't handle the necessary transfer rates. So for some people, having FireWire ports is a necessity.I've also never used customer support for anything to date are you saying I'll need it with a mac?
It's certainly nice knowing that if you need it, you're not going to be in a queue for 45 minutes waiting to talk to someone from India who will just read a script from a computer screen.I've also mentioned in the past that I very rarely try to sell on an old PC. PC buyers dont want to buy outdated hardware, Mac buyers dont mind.
PC buyers don't want to buy "outdated" hardware because most of them buy PCs with Windows on it. If they were using a decent OS their hardware wouldn't become obsolete quite so quickly.0 -
USB 3 is better and cheaper to produce than esata and firewire and should be out soon.
As should FireWire S3200. FireWire S6400 is also in the works.
FireWire uses less processing power, can use longer cables runs, can daisy-chain devices, and cen deliver more power.
Apple won an Emmy for developing it.0
