I think the possible problem with the discussion as to whether this is strange or not, along with ONW's not so subtle comment of what kind of course you're on, is it is largely dependent on what the purpose of the essay is.
If it contributes towards your degree in a defining way then it is silly to have a tutor tell you which bits to change prior to them marking it property and it is unfair for some students to get their work checked prior to final marking and other not. However I'm in my first year of a science degree at a 'proper' university and I have had one instance where we had two lectures on a subject, got given an essay title and told to submit a draft prior to a tutorial. The tutorial was basically a supplementary discussion on the bits of the topic which we weren't sure on based on what we'd written in our draft. We then went away and wrote the proper essay which was marked to give us our final grade. This essay was worth 4% of a module, so 2% of the year as a whole and a lot less than that towards my degree.
As everyone doing the module was treated the same, and the essay was more to do with helping us understand the topic rather than marks towards the degree I don't see a problem with this.0 -

There are a couple of modules like this at my uni but, as you say, it is structured into the timetable so everyone is treated the same and it is very clear what type of feedback will be given. Plus it is only the first part of the assignment that is treated in this way.
It is as much about study skills as anything else because it assesses whether students have listened to the feedback and done something constructive with it; the final grade reflects this.
I don't know of a tutor who will read a final draft and then tell a student how to improve it. Seems absurd to me as it clearly won't be the students work!0 -

What course do you do/did then?
I'm saying nothing! :silenced:
There is a lot of support available at my uni but not in the form of checking final drafts.
Can you really not see a problem with this?0 -

Of course its wrong if its a final draft but it wasn't a final draft when I asked the Q's but the tutor did say this looks well I 'think' it will get this as they only had a quick skim of it, and I still had to do a bit with it afterwards0 -

That sounds perfectly reasonable as it's about improving your understanding of the subject and your learning. Quite a different thing from,
"Yes they will tell you how to improve your grade if you ask the right q's after they have given you feedback on what they think needs improving, as I almost got an essay from a 2.1 to a 1st by asking the right questons:rolleyes: "
which is simply grade grabbing with no constructive purpose.0 -
