Pork mince is great in a bolognese sauce or lasagne. Much prefer it to beef mince.
Another way to use pork mince is to mix it with beef mince. When I lived in Germany butchers & supermarkets sold 'half and half' mince i.e. half beef, half pork. It's especially good for a chilli con carne.0 -
Thanks all, got some really good ideas now, cant wait to try one!0

Pig-sty Pie (cottage pie but with minced pork instead)?
Cows don't live in cottages, so it should be "Swineherd's Pie" (ie. Shepherd's Pie, but with pork). Turkey mince (now cheaper than minced pork) should be "Poultryman's Pie". Apples - stew with a little sugar to make a pie filling, or puree it to make apple sauce or layer with cream. yoghourt, custard for an apple fool dessert....
Pork - mix with seasoning(your choice of spices/herbs), few breadcrumbs, very finely chopped onion, maybe a bit of dry sage and onion stuffing - form into burgers or meatballs or mini koftas like the kebab shops do, and stuff into pitta breads or burger buns or on skewers (cook them first though!!)One life - your life - live it!0 -
Hi there, I don't post often but this one's worth it. I think pork and apple meatballs are a fab idea seeing that you have both to use up, BUT for future reference I just used this recipe http://www.villagenet.co.uk/recipe/apple-cake-spicy.html to use up some apples on the turn and it was absolutely delish. No good for the waistline mind you, I could have snaffled the whole lot...
Hope you make something tasty!
Oh, and as a PS - thanks to everyone on this board I am a real lurker but find all the tips so useful and it is really helping me (slowly) change the way I do things, as you can get from an ideal/feeling you ought to do something, to actually knowing how!

You can use pork mince for anything you'd use minced beef for, but it is lower in fat and doesn't reduce down as much as cheap fatty minced beef would do.
You wanted a beefburger recipe, so ...
BEEFBURGER
Makes 2 quarter pounders
INGREDIENTS
250g of lean minced beef*
Ground pepper to taste
1 tablespoon of oil
METHOD
Divide the mince into two halves. Squeeze each half into a ball and then flatten it out into a disc. Make them firm, so that they don’t fall apart. Make them chunky, as thin edges will cook too quickly. Season with the pepper.
Put the oil into a frying pan on a medium heat. Fry the burgers for about 5 minutes on each side.
ADDITIONS & ALTERNATIVES
Add some finely chopped onion. Add some herbs.
Use minced lamb, pork or turkey, whichever is cheaper, instead of minced beef. If you use minced lamb, add some finely chopped mint, dried mint or some mint sauce. If you use minced pork, add some finely chopped apple or some apple sauce. If you use minced turkey, add some cranberry sauce.
If you need to make the mince go further, add some grated carrot.
If the burgers won’t hold together, add some beaten egg. If you make the mixture too wet, add some breadcrumbs.
Cook the burgers under a preheated medium grill for about 5 minutes on each side instead of frying. If the mince is very lean, you might need to coat the burgers with a little oil.
TIPS
When squeezing the mince, imagine it's someone you don't like.
Chilling the burgers in the fridge helps them to hold together whilst cooking.
You can make the burgers using a burger press. This is a round mould, which you fill with the mince and then press it into uniformly sized burgers. However, hand made burgers have more ‘rustic charm’ and there’s no washing up.
* Use good quality lean and finely ground mince. The cheaper the mince, the higher the fat content and the more coarsely it is ground. Use chuck steak, which is reasonably cheap but doesn’t have too much fat, and either get the butcher to grind it, or invest in a meat grinder and do it yourself. The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.0 -
Squish up the pork with grated apple, maybe bit of strong cheese, maybe some sage/pepper, make sausage shapes and cook gently?
Or on the same lines, put layer of sliced onion, layer of apple, layer of pork and some stock in a casserole? Perhaps add a touch of caraway to red cabbage and serve?I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0
