i'm more than happy to do the finances - daughter of a marriage where mum had the housekeeping taken off her the day after payday, and she was expected to get an entire months shopping before he took it back, and heaven forbid they ru out of stuff before the next payday and he didn't get his packed lunch.
i do try and teach OH though as it's nice to share the responsibility. one of the first things i taught him was about savings. He's learnt that one well though.
  • Thanks all of you for your support with DS2, its been such a worry.

I did say to him about getting some groceries for him, and he turned his nose up at the idea. I think he would have been happy with some cash but I'm a bit reluctant to send more money.

Unbelievably, his last emails have been about buying a car!!!! He is very close to having been driving for a year, so the premium would fall massively, and he is looking at insurance and finding that it is 'only' £76 a month (if he says its kept here, rather than where he is in Newcastle). We've used just about every argument you can think of but I'm not sure he's heard us. Unfortunately the university will be handing him £1,000 in a few days, and I think its burning a hole in his pocket - never mind his maxed out overdraft etc.

All is ok here moneywise. I worked out that I'd worked 18.5 hours at the end of work on .... Tuesday!!! No one I feel so tired :o. I'm working today (slow start) and then I'm off until Wednesday, thank goodness. I got some money from Quidco which I've transferred to my account and to the CC (it gets paid into the joint account). Sub £2K - :jI can't imagine what its like being sub £200, SA! Funnily enough OH is not great with money either. I do all the bills and joint account stuff, and he has what is left in his account to play with - which is kind of the same as being given money in his hand! These men eh!

  • Just wanted to add a couple of things - haven't edited post above as its already long...

DS2 isn't good with lists if he is already in another mindset - he's a bit obsessed with not sleeping at the moment (and the car of course). I hope he's coming back in a few weeks and I think while he's home I might be able to talk to him about mealplans and shopping lists, and at that point do an internet shop of sensible things and get it delivered. I've got a feeling that he likes being able to just buy ready made food, and has a bit of that awful 'because I'm worth it' mentality.

I love the toilet roll story Milann. PBH - for DD. I kind of had that reaction when I'd given DS2 £30 on the Friday and he had a bag of pasta and 2 jars of sauce the whole of the next week and no breakfast and no lunch. After feeling desparately unhappy I thought - where did all that money go - and of course he didn't want to talk about that. Actually £30 should have been able to see him through the week quite well. Yes, LT - it is computer stuff, at Northumbria (Newcastle).

    I can't remember the other thing :o

Hi Cbm - at the risk of sounding like my mum, I think money is too easily available to young ones these days, it's too easy come easy go. They don't appreciate the true value of it and there's usually someone to bail them out when it all goes pear-shaped.

Just noticed your new total in your signature - woo hoo! :T

  • Kids eh!! It's easy giving advice when they're someone elses.

the good thing is they usually turn out OK in the end - it's the getting there that wears us out!!

Your balance is just brill - well done.

Don't you just know that some time in the future they will be going through exactly the same thing with their kids! And saying exactly the same to them as we are doing now! Bless 'em!

  • I've just emailed DS2 asking how he is getting on - no contact yesterday evening, after quite a flurry of msns, emails and texts the day before. Hopefully that means that he was out with his mates or managing to sleep or even studying!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yep I think money is coming too easily to them in big chunks - bursary etc; although wasn't it always the way with grants etc?

I'm not working today - hoorah - so intend to be productive! I've already changed sheets, put laundry in, done banks etc (all ok) packaged an ebay item that sold on BIN after 2 mins and 19 seconds (is that a record?) and had a quick tidy round so downstairs isn't too bad. In the rest of the day I intend to:

    Body Balance
    Post office with ebay parcel
Get washing outside in the sunshine
    Wash kitchen floor
Admin for training course tomorrow (voluntary work) - print certificates, register, handouts etc)
See if I can find an ipod car cassette adapter going chirpy cheapy as mine is broken, ditto sat nav in car charger.
Hunt out more ebay items to photograph over the weekend; this will be the 6th week of turbolisting in advance, uploading on a Thursday to finish Sunday - I'm quite chuffed. I think I'm scraping the barrel a bit now though.

    Have a good day all

you are so good with ebay, i just can't bring myself to do this these days, I may insist that OH turf out the dvd's left from the last car boot and have a look at Music magpie, even pennies is more than i would get for giving them to charity.

Cbm - have you actually got anything left in your house after all that ebaying? Have a great weekend!
