thriftlady - love the skirt, so glad that your daughter likes it. Would you believe that at this very moment I have the book sitting at the side of me, having borrowed it from the library. Do you have your own copy? I think it is a most fantastic book and would love own one.

I wanted a new sunshade for a garden swing seat only to find they don't make them any more Cheapest I could find on the internet was about £160!!! and I wasn't sure it was the right one. The only other alternative was made to measure (and I'm sure that would have been a lot more).

I had some unbleached calico which was enough when I joined two lengths together with a run and fell seam. I bought green bias binding for about £6 and used the old sunshade as a pattern. The tedious bit was putting on the bias binding round the edge. I'm sure there's an attachment for my Bernina that would do it but it would take practice even if I had it so I did it the long winded way - pin tack stitch, fold, pin tack stitch.

It looks really good now it's done. Tomorrow I need to go to Milletts because they sell some waterproofing solution that you can use in the washing machine. Not sure how much that will be but I'm sure the total will be a lot less than £160!!

Of course having done all that, it's now going to rain tomorrow. Sorry about that!
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

Maryb: I sense a new business opportunity! :p I am impressed by your can-do attitude, &you've saved £££££££££££s

Ocemeer: this place has a huge range including 'historical' patterns that might be quirky & wedding-y https://www.habithat.co.uk/index.php. sadly, I don't know about pillow lace but my mum does filet crochet

I know what you mean, I've only just started sewing for my daughter-she's 9 now and beginning not to like the kind of clothes I would like her to wear so I've missed the boat a bit, I should have started sewing when she was little. I think we'll be alright with the skirt though.

Bellaquidsin- I do own the book 'Seams to Me'. I bought it along with 'Weekend Sewing' by Heather Ross. Not very money saving I know, but if you want to use the pattern pieces included in both books you won't have to trace them.

If you search on flickr, you will find lots of examples of sewing from these two books, and of course both authors have websites and patterns you can buy online.

I wanted a Cath Kidston-style lined basket but didn't want to pay CK prices.

    I had the fabric & found a strawbag in MrT's (£7 with 20%off=£5.60)

Thriftlady - What a gorgeous skirt :T I used to make all sorts for my DD but she doesn't want it now

Luxor - I love that bag! I may have to [STRIKE]steal[/STRIKE] borrow your idea if you don't mind :D

I have a white scoop neck tee shirt which is lovely quality. I had to soak it in bleach last week as I'd spilled pasta sauce on it  and a few littles holes have come up around the bottom edge. I bought some embroidered flowers from a local craft shop - 45p each - and have sewn a line of them round the bottom in a line zig zagging up & down. I also put three round the neck to bring it together. It looks brilliant I shall just have to be careful when cooking pasta sauce again. I wouldn't mind but I had my apron on too :rotfl:

Well, I have tried to take a faulty zip out of DH's trousers (see my thread) but to get a new one in seems to me about as easy as sexing day old chicks. Unless anyone can tell me otherwise?

Failing that does anyone have any ideas of possible uses for grey trouser material?

    Hi Ladies

Can anyone tell me if there's a thread particular to different sewing machine models here on MSE? I don't want to start one if there's an existing thread hanging around, although I've searched and can't find one and I don't want to hijack here.

    Thanks!

The hamster has chewed a hole in my teenager DD's brand new skinny jeans a few inches above the knee. Any ideas of a trendy way to patch it please?
