As I can't do jokes, thought that I would do a list for the thread..

This is from "The Alcoholic and the help he needs" published 1972
A tentative chart of alcohol addiction.

It reflects my experience of the downward spiral very closely.

    Social drinking.
    Occasional relief drinking.
    Heavy habitual (or occupational) drinking.
    Constant relief drinking commences.
    Increase in alcohol tolerance.
    Onset of memory blackouts.
    Increasing dependence on alcohol.
    Surreptitious drinking.
    Repeated "under influence" driving.
    Urgency of first drinks.
    Feelings of guilt about drinking.
    Unable to discuss problem.
    Memory blackouts increase.
Decrease of ability to stop drinking when others do (Loss of control)
    Drinking bolstered with excuses.
    Grandoise and aggressive behaviour
    Persistent remorse.
    Efforts to control fail repeatedly.
    Promises and resolutions fail.
    Tries geographical escapes.
    Loss of interest in others.
    Family and friends avoided.
    Work and money troubles.
    Unreasonable resentment.
    Neglect of food.
    Loss of ordinary willpower.
    Tremors and early morning drinks.

    Complete defeat admitted.

Development period for addiction can be between 2 to 25 years.
    Average 10 - 15 years.

    wow!

Never seen that before....think the shocking thing is the slow-burn development of up to 25 years.....and yet it makes sense!

    thanks for posting.

Yep, that about sums it up. Just a small quibble about 'drinking with people of a lower social class', this difficulty affects all social classes, its not a class thing, the only thing I notice is that alcoholics with lots of money drink posh expensive stuff, and some of us who reach the pits buy white cider, but its all alcohol-we're all in the same boat. Alcoholism isn't a class thing and no drinker should be regarded as inferior to another- in fact when I spent some time with other street drinkers at my worse, they were the most compassionate and supportive people I've ever met- they never judged me at a time when everyone else had left me as a lost cause. Sorry, but I feel strongly about this, whatever you drink, wherever you are from- a drunk is a drunk, material wealth has nothing to do with it- we all end up in the same place if we don't sort ourselves out.

    Hi all

eselt - I thought the same thing when I read it - but I guess it's from 1972, when perhaps more 'classism' existed than today? Or perhaps just in a more overt form?

Well, I've been to 2 more meetings this week. Had adrink last Saturday as you know, and then had a bottle on tuesday night. Apart from that nothing. And given tonight is a Friday night and my car broke today, I feel a sense of calm about it all. Very strange. Perhaps there is something to this AA stuff after all!

I'm really hoping that day by day I can continuie this? I was given the big book by another member, which I thought was really kind of them, and have been slowly reading through it. While I am not drinking during hte day, with no job and everything gone, I do believe that that is truely a 'yet' unless I sort this out.

I do hope everyone is ok - I've got 7 pages to read (and I have settings to read the most on each page!) so think that I'm not gonna catch up :)

My interpretation of this is not a "dissing" of classes but more the fact that the alcoholic has exhausted all social communication within his own class/peers that he seeks alcoholic solace with a class he wouldn't have thought at one time he would do!! iykwim.....

we dont know where the alcoholic bum in the street has derived from we just know where he is at now - and that obviously is classless - as they are from all walks of life but together in one through alcohol and having reached rock bottom they are seen as lower than the functionng secret alcohol! (seen as lower by society).

We are all, of course, entitled to interpretate this as individuals.

Thanks for all those posts and well done everyone, especially WB and Netttie and TTGU and I've probably forgotten loads of people too.

What can I say, there's been some great groan out loud jokes (don't stop now!) and some heartfelt thought provoking stuff. Jo isn't it odd how it gets in your head like that.

So this mushroom walks into a bar and sits down. The mushroom says, "Hey bartender! Can I get a drink?" The bartender says, "Sorry man, we don't serve your kind around here." The mushroom replies, "What man? Im a FUN GUY!"

I have managed a first for me. I didn't drink when hungover today, even though I spend 3 hours in the pub. Feeling really good about that. I didn't manage to stick to the diet for breakfast but did for lunch and dinner so that's good too. Off to put my halo down for the evening. Sleep well everyone.
