I've finished waxing the unit and put it in my bedroom. I've stripped the mirror bit too now. Hope to wax it soon. Still need to strip the mirror supports tomorrow so I'll do them before I wax the other bit. Then I can get it all reassembled and put my glass bits on it :D. Going to put the drawer liners in it later on tonight. Then I can put our clothes away and stop DH from hogging the space with his big pants!

Look forward to seeing a photo of all this activity:T

Nope! I've been really busy so not had much time to think about it. At the moment I'm swaying towards having 2 massive roman blinds and then having a small one in the cupboard that will stay open. If the left blind is about 6 1/2ft long then I should be able to reach the mechanism from the corner of the stairs. That involves me having to find fabric and make blinds! These blinds will need to be perfect because the hall is the major feature of the house and I'm not sure if I'm up to that. I think I need to make the ones for the bedroom first.

I've decided the carpet will be this on the stairs if I can get something the same or coordinating for the landing. The hall will be parquet. I can't decide whether to keep the side of the stairs next to the runner white or varnished. Any style suggestions would be appreciated.

Oh and the red is only below the dado type panel not all over but you knew that didn't you?

  • I agree with him! I always think that it is a shame to paint beautiful wood. I only paint when the wood is not salvageable.

When my 4 children were growing up I bought cheap second hand pieces of funiture for their bedrooms that I painted to match, and because the items were so cheap I didn't worry about the wear and tear they placed on them because I could always paint them again if necessary. However, if a piece was good quality wood I treated it completely differently. If it was French polished I cleaned it up and if it was varnished I stripped it down and either restained and varnished or waxed. I still have pieces of furniture I bought over 20 years ago that I bought for peanuts that I revived and still have in use.

Love the runner, it will tie everything in. I'd do the stairs the same as the bannister - think it's white? I think either would look right as you have the wooden flooring at the bottom too.
Irishgirl - it's a great table, what are you planning to do with it?

I love the table, hmmmm would I paint it? It does depend where its going to go and is it solid wood. You could strip it down and re-varnish or wax, or, you could paint (would look nice I think) or paint the underneath bits and sand the top. Seen people do that with their dresser's and kitchen tables. Ohh Decisions
    A nice buy.:T
