i have just bought a house and having it completely renovated. Want the house to be "traditional with a modern twist" anyway, got to be honest, not that keen on 2nd hand furniture from unknown sources (had it drummed into me as a child dont ask!lol!) but have just inherited loads of furniture from family which is just ASKING to be rubbed down and painted.
Anyway, have no idea where to start! Or what paint to use? Does it chip off?? etc.

First thing is to get your head round the not wanting stuff from unknown sources which I can understand...way my brain got round it was to thoroughly antibacterialise anything I got so I knew that any nasty germs were gone!!
Secondly in terms of stripping furniture I tend to use nitromorse (most diy places have it) but make sure (unlike me!!) that any surrounding surfaces are covered/protected cause it really does strip fast!! My floorboards are evidence! Also maybe get books from library or do internet searches and see what you like/dont like...most of all dont rush cos you then tend to do sommat decide you dont like it and have to start again! Car boots are also fab for getting bargains..as are freecycle and ebay! Also old furniture is generally far better mad ethan new stuff...ie bedside table I got for 50p has beautifyl dovetailed joints...would never get that on new furniture!Nerd no 109 Long haulers supporters DFW #1! "is eggshell a finish of paint?" From what I understand its a colour, and it looks absolutely beautiful on stripped wood. I made up a floor standing lamp with F&B eggshell paint (felt I could justify the paint because i'd got the lamp for £1). And it looks stunning. Everyone who comes round always comments on it. I have made up loads of furniture in a shabby chic style for my new flat and I suppose I would say that its always best to spend a little more on the paint to get a nice finish, especially when the furniture was free or of negligable(sp?) cost.0

Eggshell is a colour of paint, but it is also a paint finish - usually solvent-based, like gloss, but with a more matt appearance. Having said that, they are probably moving towards a water-based fomula these days.
I prefer it on doors, etc, rather than gloss...
