hhhhmmmm - no - I had a wee seat on one of the weight machines to get my breath back! ;) I did then walk to the car though! :p

Good - got to be sensible about this exercise lark you know ;)

Good luck with the WI Dragon - and you're right - I think they might get a bit of a shock if you turned up in Boots in the buff! ;)

Thanks! Mind you I would weigh in peace as everyone else would be passed out in horror :rotfl:

you've got the right attitude though - keep on in there and you'll be a skinny minny in no time!

    Oooh I do hope so!

How are you getting on with the eating? Are you getting enough calories into you?

    xx

Managed to get over 1,000 for two days running :j:j:j

  • Well done Dragon!!! That's good news!!

Can I just ask, when the rest of you are trying to lose weight - do you limit your intake on things like fruit? I've already had a banana and a nectarine today, I have an apple to keep me going on the journey home, but since I seem to be having (another) starver of a day, I was thinking of buying some strawberries when I pop out for lunch - do you reckon this is too many calories to still be expecting to lose weight?

  • PS - I will also have probably a sandwich for lunch, and a str fry for tea - so I will be eating other things as well! :P

I think if you are going to snack on anything then fruit and veg are the way to go!

    Nectarine 60 calories
    Banana (medium size) 121 calories
    Apple 72 calories
Total 253 calories compared to say a Snikers bar 271 calories.
253 calories is half to two thirds of a full meal and none of this helps you to feel full for long.
And then strawberries at 6 calories each.
Lots of good healthy vitamins for sure, but it's also quite a few calories.
It's fruit sugar which is better than refined cane sugar but it is still sugar. Sugar means blood sugar rapidly goes up getting a quick fix for hunger, but then insuline kicks in (unless your diabetic) big time which means an hour after eating the sugary thing blood sugar level crashes throught the floor and now your really hungry again.
Keeping hunger at bay is all about keeping the blood sugar at a steady level and eating things that are slow release for blood sugar.
If you must eat something sugary do it at the end of another meal when there is other food being digested to keep your blood sugar stable for longer.
I'm going to be controversal and classify fruit as virtually junk food, almost as bad as a sweets/chocolate bar.
Carbohydrate gets processed by the body into sugar but it's at a much slower rate that avoids the peaks and troughs in blood sugar level.
Carbohydrate source, e.g. slice of bread around 80 to 100 calories and you probably won't need to eat anything else for a lot longer saving 80-100+ calories.
If it's just a short term fix you need because dinner is nearly ready eat a raw medium sized carrot at 25 calories. Being raw keeps the stomach busy for longer plus it's giving you some vitamins just like that 60 calorie nectorine.

This absolutely works, been doing it since February, I never need to snack between the 3 meals a day unless you want to count the 20 calorie cups of tea and coffee with semi-skimmed milk which nudges the blood sugar up just a touch when I need it.

Also wait at least 20-25 minutes after eating anything before deciding to eat more, it takes that long for the food you've eaten to "register".

When loosing weight (or fat) calorie intake being below calorie use is what is going to work. Too many calories and it goes to fat regardless of what it is you have eaten.

i tend not to snack in between meals but i probably have larger meals than i should to compensate this. so typically cereal and a slice of toast or an egg and 2 slices of toast for breakfast, lunch could be salad, jacket potato, or a ww ready meal if i feel ravenous then dinner tends to be meat or fish and veg or pasta with a tomato based sauce. i try not to have carbs at every meal ie bread, pasta or rice. but have them twice most days cos that is what fills me up the most. I then normally have nothing in between meals and nothing at night. I haven't been calorie counting of late but i haven't lost as much this month as i wanted so i think next month i will have to start doing it and see if it makes a difference.

I'm terrible for snacking in between meals, fruit doesn't fill me up no matter how long I wait, but based on those calories from fruit, sounds like I may as well have a snickers bar - at least that will fill me up! :rotfl:

I'm a carbs girl too and I tend to eat late at night as well which is why I must be finding it hard to lose the lbs. I don't finish work some nights until 8pm and I'm usually starving by then so tend to wanna grab something stodgy like pasta or a sandwich.

I jumped on the scales this morning (and I really wished I hadn't) and I'm 1 lb heavier :mad: but only halfway through the week so I'm not panicking yet. We'll have to see how I fare for my weigh in on Sunday.
All the coffee in Columbia won't make me a morning person... :D:p

"Eating late at night makes it harder to loose weight" - it's a complete myth, I read on caloriecount.about.com earlier this year. Personal experience also says this is simply not true. It's 8.44pm in the evening and my dinner is still cooking downstairs, this is normal dinner time for me, it's also Pasta but I only have 3oz/75g (about 270 calories) dry weight these days. Still loosing 1-2lbs a week.
Pasta is good in the right quantity as it satisfies appetite keeping you away from 271 calorie snickers bars, 181 calorie packets of crisps etc. that won't keep you satisfied.
Calories in vs. calories used is all that counts, doesn't matter what time your eating.
Lower carbohydrates fine, you need to reduce blood sugar a bit to burn fat and get calories down somewhere, but you also need to feed yourself properly otherwise the whole weight control game becomes miserable (constant hunger) and you cannot keep it up.

My sin is beer and wine, only at weekends (mostly), pint of beer 180 calories, 275ml red wind about the same. I make room for it in my weekly calorie "budget":o makes it all worthwhile.

Here is my day according to http://caloriecount.about.com.
My office worker existence means they estimate I use 2030 calories a day, recommend 1700 calories a day to meet my target, 1500 minimum for a man. Weekends I'll hit 1700-1800 easy, weekdays 1350-1600. Fairly substantial pasta evening meal this evening but the day has come out at 1525 calories. Did feel pretty hungry on the train home but otherwise OK.

Other days I will have more veg. than today.

Cannot recommend this tool highly enough to at least help get started and check on yourself from time to time. Learnt so much from the site in general and the following weight history would not have happened as easily and for as long if I hadn't used it.

i watched a programme last night on bbc1 which was very useful in explaining science behind weight loss. they did an experiment with a woman, asking her to record her food intake either by video at the end of the day or a written diaryafter each meal. they made her drink some special water and tested her urine to determine how many calories she had consumed. It turned out that when recording via video she was underestimating her calories by something like 50%. When recording after each meal. she was still underestimating but not by as much.
I think the programme said that everyone underestimates calorie intake by up to 40% either by getting portion sizes wrong or by forgetting about calories in drinks and snacks and thinking healthier items have less calories.
it was called 10 things you need to know about losing weight. its on iplayer if anyone wants to watch it. I thought some of the points raised made a lot of sense. I was amazed by the experiment that showed that having meals liquidised into a soup kept you fuller for longer than eating it in the solid form.
I have had a look at the calorie count website and i am going to get used to it over the next few days and then use it daily through june, i hope that it will make a difference to my weight loss.
