I have never met or spoken to my in-laws as they live in Nigeria and OH doesnt have much to do with them. I have tried to encourage him to get in touch but he wont. He also has 8 brothers and sisters, many in the UK and he doesnt speak to them either. I think he was just raised very differently to me and it has taken him a long time to get used to the way my family is close and we have get togethers etc. Even though he has known my parents for nearly 9 years he still called my mum 'ma'am' and dad 'sir' until quite recently!!
I think its sad in many ways that beanie wont get to know OH's side of the family at all especially in relation to her cultural background.
My mum is very much the over-bearing mother in law. I speak to her everynight and she lists all her purchases for beanie for that day - recent ones include a red lacquer piano to be engraved with Beanies name (it is quite large and completely OTT), a wooden dolls house (she insisted on colouring in a light shade of brown the daddy and the baby that came with it as she said Beanie might get confused!); clothes for a 2,3 and 5 year old (her excuse is either 'its a classic' or ' I just couldnt help myself', muslin clothes in abundance and in every colour, a teddy bear that plays womb sounds etc etc etc.
I think she buys atleast 4 or 5 things a week and has been doing so since I told her I was pregnant at about 5 weeks. So, you can imagine the multitude of stuff that we have accumulated.
OH doesnt mind, he just rolls his eyes. Amongst the things we really dont need, she has also bought has alot that we do, which has taken the financial pressure off us. When I have been with her and she has tried to buy things we dont need, she has managed to control herself.
She has however become obsessed with the search for the perfect 'ethnic' doll (as she calls it) because she thinks it is very important for beanie to have one. There was great excitement last night when she announced that she had found 'the one'. I love my mum she is trying to be so politically correct and make sure that beanie is in touch with her culture that I really have to laugh sometimes as its not something that me and OH really give a second thought! Our baby is our baby and that the end of it but I do hope that my mum tones it down when she is here otherwise she might give beanie a complex!Proud Mummy to Leila aged 1 whole year:j0 -
Mookie if it makes you feel any better Roo will probably come out a pale shade of blue
DH is scottish and does not do sun at all bless him and the standing joke is he's pale blue... I'm a bit of a mix with some suspected portugese somewhere far back in my ancestory so as well as being typical danish blonde I have skin that tans really well... but I guess we could look for a nice blue doll for her

Gosh - unlucky people with MILs! My parents and ILs haven't bought a thing yet cos I told them not to! MIL wanted to knit stuff but I asked her to wait till it's born, then she can do us some cardigans and mittens for the autumn/winter when we know what size bubba is.
My mum and dad are going to give us some cash although I don't know how much but suspect we are talking hundreds if not more as they are quite well off and soooo excited about their first grandchild!
I think everyone knows that I am such a control freak I will buy my own stuff! I knw we will get gifts and that's fine, but in terms on preparing we want to just buy basic essentials and see what we need once Bubba is actually here.
Talking of which - 30 weeks today!! I cannot believe I have only 10/11 weeks to go! Inspirational, tinkerbell - we're waging an ongoing war with our apartment. Between the bug infestation in the pantry and the nursery that is entirely filled with Daddy's toys (need a storage unit for them; he has a fetish for rebuilding pinball machines) our place is a disaster zone. We've made inroads: our bedroom, the bathroom, the kitchen, the dining room and the office are all livable, although maintenance is sporadic since I'm currently engaged in battle with the living room while Himself deals with the pantry.
It's getting done. What I want is to collect a pile of stuff to go into the basement storage, and then to hire a van and fill it with stuff to bring to the charity shop. What he wants is not to hire a van and Freecycle everything, although the complete lack of response to ads we've put up so far is not encouraging.Organised Birthdays and Christmas: Spend So Far: £193.75; Saved from RRP £963.76

Hubby just rang... He's got 4 tickets to see Top Gear being filmed on 1st July!!! Very exciting stuff but I don't know if I'll be able to go... Baby will only be about 6weeks old by then (depending on how long it takes to arrive!) and I don't know how long filming will take or anything... Think they'd notice if I put it in the baby hawk and smuggled it in under a maternity top?A very proud Mummy to 3 beautiful girls... Hello all
Congrats to the 3 new mums! So nice to see the list above me gradually getting shorter!
DH & I went out sat night, first time since before Christmas  & had a lovely time, after a couple of beers (him!) he was so like himself & willing to talk about baby, even suggesting we tell DD first (she always moans she's never told gossip!) & wait for the 'phone calls - she's also an incurable gossip! :rotfl:Did that this morning (10.30) & first comments from DS1 were on facebook an hour later.
Feel loads better now it's in the open, hated not being able to talk to people about it. Just got to stop DD spending money she hasn't got - uphill struggle methinks!
Inlaws - MIL & FIL been dead for years, but no probs before, SILs all stars, never interfere, always supportive, fight amongst themselves but always there for any of family in a crisis - what you want really!
Toddler in bed, got about half an hour, so off to wash kitchen/hallway floors & hang out more washing, then child I mind gets here at 3, so will pop back around teatime. Also got 2 beds in garden to weed so i can plant cabbages & peas - got a variety of petits pois that doesn't need staking, so will see how it goes. Managed to get potatoes covered again over weekend, will see if they produce spuds later on. *Note to self - ask MrsT for growing advice!*
Sami - thanks for post about bras, etc., emailed them, but I bet they get loads of replies through you! Will pm you later re facebook addition - as DD now in action, I might as well have another group to chat with!
Labour vibes, hugs, etc to you all.

Grrr, perfect drying weather and my flaming line just snapped!!! I'm obviously not meant to have retractable washing lines... That's the 2nd one in 2 years that's broken... Think I will resort to plain old plastic coated!
